Dec 2017
Week 37 work party

On Monday our old friend Sander came for a visit with his mate Dave. They travelled from The Netherlands and arrived in time for elevenses of apple pie and squirty cream. Sander had helped us at the beginning of our fishery journey when we used tonnes of gravel for the swims and the track down to the lake.

We had lots of rain, frosty conditions, snow and the lake froze on Saturday. Despite the conditions, Dave caught 10 carp to 41lb13oz and Sander had 2 carp to 31lb. They set up their bivvy in swim 2 but fished most of the lake.

During their visit we managed to erect a wooden building onto concrete pillars and to cover the area with gravel. It will be a new dining room for next season when it is finished.

November stocking

For this stocking we used a local fishfarmer, in whom we have much confidence and keeping it local meant that with the carp  travelling less than 30 minutes in the tanks would see less stress and used to the local water.

So at 8.45 this rainy and cold Saturday morning we arrived at the local fish farmers lake and met up with the men who were assisting him with the netting. The lake to be netted had been draining since Thursday and there was just a pool of water in front of the dam with backs showing out of the water and sluggishly moving about. The net box was put on the platform and three men started dragging it around to trap the fish within its folds. When it was joined up at the platform the fish were transferred into boxes and lifted out of the lake and placed in an oxygenated travelling tank for our order and ground tanks for the order for Lac du Der. Jacques sent his son, Cedric, to deliver our fish and we went with him in his van.

Back at Barrington's Lake, he parked the van adjacent to swim 7 and fished them out of the tank into a carry box and using a cradle and weigh sling, the fish were weighed and placed into the lake. We put in around 600lb of common carp. There were 54 fish between 10 and 17lb. They should grow well with all of the natural food available to them.

On our return, as is usual, everybody was sitting around the long table in the hut enjoying the open fire and their aperitifs. We were invited to join them and tucked into crispy bread and pate followed by BBQ'd cutlets and sausages washed down with red or rose wine. Hard work rewarded with good food and company as is the mode de vie around here.

This carp stocking is intended  to compliment the many larger carp already in our lake. The purpose is twofold, firstly, they will we believe, increase competition for the food sources and therefore increase the overall run rate in the lake. The lake has a plentiful source of natural food and we expect these young carp to grow on quickly.

Secondly it should ensure the lake remains well stocked long into the future with a high ratio of commons and mean we have to introduce new carp  (with all the risk that can entail) less often.

However, it will undoubtedly mean that our anglers will also be catching a fair share of these smaller ones for the next couple of seasons whilst they grow on. So some anglers may wish to adjust tactics accordingly.

We look forward to seeing you here and bending your rods!

A potential new lake record

Peter and Andy came for a weekend from Stuttgart and stayed in the Chalet. We had stocked up with dry wood for the wood burner as the weather was very wet and cold. They fished from the Jetty and despite the appalling conditions, Peter caught a ball of a mirror early on Saturday morning, which they weighed at 51lb.

The fish was last caught in September at 39lb 10oz by Carsten Krüger, so whilst not out of the realms of possibility it would have had to have put on a lot of weight in just a few months. For this reason we are going to wait until it has been captured again to verify the weight and confirm it as a lake record.

Week 33

Our friend Daz came for a few days to help us out and to deliver the Christmas groceries. While he was there he had 4 carp including a gorgeous yellow bodied mirror of 27lb.

Ivan came for a 5 night visit on the Sunday as part of a 2 venue holiday trip. He set up in swim 3 after a coffee and walk round with us. He baited up and then started fishing on Monday morning. He didn't bring scales or a camera and left his phone in the car for the duration of his stay. He wasn't interested in weights or trophy shots but we asked if he would use our scales to weigh the fish for our records and he allowed us to take photos of two of his captures. On the wednesday he moved to swim 5 and continued to catch. He had nine carp to 37lb during the 4 days of fishing.

The weather became cooler during his stay and we had some frosty mornings along with the clear skies and full moon. One night Ivan had an owl land in front of his bivvy which was fascinating and he enjoyed watching the kingfishers flying along the dam wall and all of the other wildlife in the arena.

30 September to 7 October 2017

What a week! Harry and Petra with their dog, Luca came for a week from The Netherlands and Arno and Kim returned for a long weekend from Belgium. The weather was mixed with sunny spells and rain and then a frost on Saturday.

Both anglers landed 6 fish apiece, Arno from swim 7 and Harry from swim 2 and then from swim 5.

Arno landed a beautiful 41lb9oz (18.9kg) mirror and Harry a fantastic 44lb8oz (20.2kg) mirror which was a new personal best. Two forties out in a week. They are certainly packing on the weight now.

Week 27 - 16 - 23 September 2017

A group of 5 Dutch anglers visited us this week. They fished swims 1, 3 and 7 and landed 26 carp to 37lb12oz. Freek had a new personal best of 16kg (35lb3oz) fishing from swim 3 with his brother Joost who landed 7 carp to 15.3kg (33lb11oz). Jan had a 26lb6oz mirror in swim 1 and his son Danny had 6 carp to 15kg (33lb) in the same swim. Gerard fished from swim 7 and landed 8 carp to 17.2kg (37lb12oz) including a 37lb7oz mirror on the final night. They mostly used RRT baits from The Netherlands and took Barry's advice on where to place the bait in their swims.

They had a BBQ in front of the Lodge on the Thursday night which we were invited to for a nice social evening.

Carsten and Anna visited from Germany as the first part of their French holiday. They rented the chalet for a relaxing week. Carsten only fished part time and landed 2 carp - a 12.5kg common and an 18kg mirror.
