margin of a lakeOver the years I have been carp fishing both in France and the UK I have lost count of the number of carp I have caught fishing the margins. I would go as far as to say it is my number one choice of feature on any water. The less pressured the venue to closer in I would chose to fish. So here are ten of my reasons why, when you turn up at a new venue in France you should not over look the margins. continue reading…

Lake view I was really looking forward to seeing Molyneux again. It’s a lovely setting and the Willow trees around the lake are statuesque & beautiful.

Being not too distant from the ports it was relatively easy to include in 5 day trip to visit and catch up with a few of the venues.

I went out to visit the lake and check with owner Andrew Molyneux on the winters works and plans for 2008.

Ros lake shot
Roseau during calmer weather conditions

I made a trip to the French carp fishing lake le Roseau in northern France in early March and the rain was horizontal as gusty winds swirled it around making conditions extremely tough for any angler.

After nearly 3 months of none stop rain pretty much across most of France the lakes were brimming over the top with water and I could have opened a mud spa on the banks!

I had called in to check on the progress of the new facilities at the lake and discuss the coming year with Christophe and Aline the owners… The new facilities involve 2 extra toilet and shower rooms on site… I must say I was quite impressed!

The plumbing and shower cubicles were all in and the only bits left to finish are the decoration and tiling. It will make a real difference to the anglers. Its planned these showers will be open during the daytime leaving the original toilet & shower open throughout the night.

Michelin AtlasFirst rule for you to remember (should you come from the UK) when planning to drive in France for a carp fishing holiday is : drive on the right side of the road! Be especially careful when setting off from service stations or restaurants on the left side of the road.
Also, bear in mind that you may have to give priority to traffic coming from the right (priorité à droite), especially in built up areas or when on small roads. Usually on large roads you do not give priority to the right, except on the peripherique, the ring road around Paris.
Many anglers I meet have not driven abroad before and apprehend the experience with some dread. In general it is not really that difficult, you just have to stay focused and make sure you concentrate and look more carefully before manoeuvring than you would at home. My Tomtom always reminds me when I drive on the left in the UK, so it is a nice touch to have this reminder when in France. As I said the most critical time is when you start off after a break. continue reading…

Commons lake 04As you can see from the previous post I’ve been out and about visiting some of the venues over the last few days. I teamed up with Bridget at the Bigot’s venues for the stocking of a few new fish. You can see from the post below that we called in at Margot to see those fish introduced.

Also on the agenda was a visit to the Bigot’s two other waters Morgane and Commons.

First off though we all met up at the fish farm to load up the trucks with carp. These carp were netted from one of the holding ponds. This was the first time that Bridget had actually attended a netting and stocking, and immediately got stuck in with helping to weigh and load the fish.Commons lake 03

Other than the ten carp and two sturgeon destined for Margot there were six fish to be added to Commons lake. These fish weighed in between 24lb and 28lb. (Michel had already added a mid thirty common last week). Once the trucks were loaded first stop was Margot (see article below) and then on to Commons.
