If you want a simple short-cut to carp fishing success you’ve come to the right place. This advice applies to any form of fishing because it is so vitally important. Here is a list of simple details that I wish I’d discovered when I began carp fishing when information was in much shorter supply. Over the years I have been shocked by the number of newer carp anglers who over-look the ultimate importance of their hooks and their hooking efficiency. So many unnecessary blank sessions come from anglers not realising details they’re missing on the end of their line and more awareness of aspects of the part of their tackle that truly matters the most… continue reading…

This is going to be my 1st adventure of France. I have been carp fishing a few years and know the basics that get me by in the UK. I was looking for advice mainly on essential fishing in France obviously a lot of the fish are much bigger than what i catch. Do I need braid if so where can i find info on braid never used it before and don’t know much about it? What’s the average rig everyone is using there and what size hooks etc etc, any advice you can give me for my 1st trip would be great.

I got talking to a guy on the bank this week about rig safety and how things have changed over the years. If you look back on books written in the 80’s by the likes of Rod H and Kevin Maddocks you’ll see several rigs that while very effective even today, are not up to the current safety standards the sport has come to expect.

Fixed lead systems were first introduced in the late 70’s and coincided with the invention of the boilie and the hair rig. The three fished together suddenly had all takes turning into real flyers. While the bolt rigs, as they were known, were undoubtedly brilliant carp catchers, they caused problems for the fish in the event of a crack off or a breakage.

Now all rigs are safe until the above mentioned event happens. The modern systems give the fish as good a chance as is possible to shed the hook and lead. This however, supposes that the anglers read the instructions and fish the rigs as they are intended by the manufacturer.

Over the last season or so I’ve seen a number of anglers using the ‘Safety’ systems incorrectly which in some cases negates totally the effectiveness they afford and takes us right back to the ‘Death’ rig scenario we used to have before carping awareness of the dangers became common knowledge.

So what are the options and how should they be set up to be safe?

By Graham Marsden and Mark Wintle

Mark Wintle and I are keen photographers as well as keen anglers, so when we decided to nip off for a week’s carp fishing in France it was very important to choose a picturesque location. We were fussy about quite a few other things too!

It needed to be a ‘civilised’ holiday with reasonable bankside accommodation; with my creaking joints these days I didn’t want to be bivvying up for a week, especially in France in April when monsoon weather is just as likely as a heat wave (and how true that turned out to be!). A chalet with nice beds or bunks, a cooker and a shower would be ideal. But if it only provided a comfortable shelter from the elements then we could manage the rest with bedchairs, stoves and a supply of fresh water. Being as neither of us wanted to fish at night (we had to be awake during daylight to take photographs), there was one more necessity in the mix: it would have to be a water that produced during the hours of daylight. And as I’ve already said, this was to be a holiday when we could wind down and relax and not a pressured mission to catch fish. continue reading…

Hi all,

Just got this e-mail report through from Les Genêts lake owner Larry Arnold.

Ben Rook from Nottingham landed a Mirror of 45lb 7oz at 11 30pm Wednesday 30th April. He was fishing the swim opposite the house after moving from the pads swim.

This carp is not the same fish as last years record of 44lb 2oz. Ben fished Boilies over lake pellet and without the aid of a bait boat good old fashioned casting. Well done to him on this superb fish.

Cheers, Larry
