58.03 birthday mirror
I am lucky enough to be able to fish on my birthday and this one was good enough to provide me with a day to remember. I commenced at 9.30am with a good high northern wind blowing right onto the dam wall and I decided this was a good time for me to start trickling in more of the new bait for 2011 that Shaun Harrison of Quest had specially mixed up for me for next season.
I had been watching a big fish crashing in the corner all last week and longing to put a rod to it, but lake was occupied. But now it was my turn she had stopped!
Now had she stopped because she had her head down on last night’s bait I had put in? Or had she moved on?
Being a believer that big fish always tend to have a favourite place I stuck to my instincts and cast a stick mix made up of the same boilie mix crushed up in the lake blender. I’d rolled about 20 baits made out of the new paste, this being the same as the boilies. They smelt really fresh.

Dave's successful rig
The rig I used was one that I thought up in 1983 – it’s explained shown on the photo.
After about 2½ hours interest was shown with 2 beeps on the buzzer, a slight pause and a further beep. Now being an angler who will not wait for screaming runs I gently removed the bobbin and lifted the rod and turned it sideways, my eyes now glued to the tip. It tapped just twice. I now knew that something was on the other end! Winding and lifting at the same time she erupted on the surface and I knew it was a big fish!
My favourite netter Sammy came to hand and managed to net her for me. I knew when Sammy couldn’t lift the net that it was something big and it turned out to be a lovely 58lb 3oz mirror.
So… eight cards, more CK aftershave, new boots and a cracking big fish… WHAT A BIRTHDAY!!
