Essential island pruning at Oakview
As most lake owners already know (but perhaps the guests are less aware), once the fishing season is over, the real work starts for the owners.
Essential maintenance jobs start as soon as the last guests leave and carry on practically the whole winter and early spring. It’s really the only chance that lake owners have for getting the larger jobs done, and it can be said that you really have to get your timing right. Too early and the grounds are waterlogged, too late and the brambles and thistles have already started to put on a growth spurt.
Each spring here at Oakview one of the jobs that we have to do is to obliterate the growth on the island. This year we were a little late and the ducks were already nesting underneath the Pampas grass – they were not too happy at being disturbed either, probably because of the 15 eggs they were in the process of hatching! Luckily we just finished in time.
In any event, the job was done and the island cleared, thankfully without too many daffodils being trampled…..
