Happy days at Le Monument
Brian with a magnificent 38.06 Monument common
Living in France and being a keen carp angler I get to fish loads of venues both commercial and municipal (lakes that are owned by the commune). Twice a year my brother in-law comes over, also a keen carp angler, and we head off fishing.
This year we had a week on Le Monument. I’d heard that it had some good, hard fighting carp in great surroundings. We were lucky to have the lake to ourselves and when we arrived the carp were roaming around in the sunshine oblivious to what was going on around them.
After having a look round we set up in the double swim and within two hours of getting the rods out Nigel had the first fish on the bank, a mirror of 33.2lb… and he could definitely confirm that the rumours we’d heard about these being some of the hardest fighting carp you’ll ever come across were true!
We each had a fish during the first night, one just over 30 and one just under, but again they fought like crazy!
The second day we’d got in to the swing of things… our bait became established and we started catching regularly. By the end of the second night we’d had carp to 38.06.
Monument holds some big commons and it was nice that the biggest fish I had during the week was just 4oz short of 40lb.
Nigel had 2 forty’s… one at 41.10 and the other at 43.4, these were both mirrors.
Mark told us that the lake record had just been broken and now stood at 45.12, but I really think there is bigger fish in there based on what we saw crashing out.
We ended the week with 34 fish of which there was;
- 2 x 40’s
- 11 x 30’s
- the rest were all twenties apart from 2 doubles that we moved to the smaller fun lake
Mark stocked this with 80 small carp last year and from what I saw from walking round it should start to produce twenties very soon.
We mainly fished a good quality fishmeal boilie with robin red. We put in around 12kg through the week as well as 25kg of pellet which Mark supplied (this is what he feeds the fish on). We did try other baits and both caught, but we ended the week with all rods on the fishmeal.
The facilities are adequate with a good shower, toilet and kitchen.
We had the food package from halfway through the week. This was great with good size portions, thanks Angela! In fact our only regret was not having it all week as we were both completely knackered and might have starved if there had not been food delivered to the bivies!
All in all a great week. Mark is a great host and I can only see Monument becoming very busy as word gets round… you won’t find a more tranquil place to fish.
Many thanks and we will be back!
Brian and Nigel
