Callum’s 42.08 Vaux mirror
The younger generations are doing really well at Vaux this year. 11 year old Callum was fishing with his dad, Colin, in the week 26th June to 3rd July – a young man to watch out for in the future! They only fished two of the nights and limited hours during the days to accommodate family outings and cool-off time in the splash pool – a very hot week, with temperatures over 30o.
By Monday they had caught and landed numerous carp including three thirties and one forty, a 34lb and 37lb to Colin and a 37lb and the 42lb8oz mirror to Callum. After Monday they concentrated mostly on stalking to the top bay with zig rigs to the basking carp.
Their best day was 10 carp caught from mid morning to early afternoon, but quite a number of fish were lost through hook pulls. The zig rigs didn’t work in the deep water, but in the shallow water they were quite devastating. They used a small yellow trimmed down pop-up; they tried red, black and other colours, but yellow was the best tactic.
Saturday, 3rd July saw the return of Ben, now aged 17, who hasn’t been to Vaux since 2004 and 2005. By Sunday morning, he and his two inexperienced angling pals, fishing on static rods to heavily baited areas, had caught five x 30s, 3 x 20s and lost five fish. All achieved their PBs; Ben once and Phil and Adam three times each.
What a pleasure it is to see such successes from our younger anglers – good luck to you all!
