In early June I am going to St Chistophe.  What are the most successfully baits for carp and what tactics work best at that lake? (don’t want to go there blind!)

Hi Lee,

Angling Lines
Check out the Angling Lines videos to get tips for this venue.

Thanks for your query I shall try to reply as fully as possible.

Firstly St Christophe is a deep water by most standards averaging around 20 feet. There are not an awful amount of features to be found,
although on peg 2 Shaun Harrison did find a slightly shallower spot at around 100 yards or so. I would suggest you start by exploring your peg with a marker rod to see if you have any variations in depth in front of you, or any gravel or silty areas. This will give you an idea where to start applying your bait.

The best technique seemed to be to bait moderately with a good mixed particle, like the Quest Baits Garlic Feast and a good quality boilie. Shaun used the Liver B8 which saw him catch carp in the video to 54lb plus. Other groups have done very well on the Quest Special Crab, check out Steve Howard’s of Carp Addict’s article here.

The main technique here was to place two rods on you baited area and keep topping it up with a moderate amount of bait, say a couple of kilos per day. This saw the carp visiting the area every day and a few getting caught. Over baiting just seemed to kill it dead for at least a day or so.
If you are on a peg with access to the margin areas don’t ignore these. The first time I went there Paul Ashley had two fabulous fish from the margin area on peg 12. His bait was mixed particle, tigers and Irish Cream boilies. In such deep water I can’t imagine the fish would be scared by a spod.

Finally there are few real lumps in this lake so I would suggest good strong lines and hooks. My preference in France is for either Berkeley Big Game or Nash Bullet in 15lb B.S. My preferred hook is the size 4 Drennan Continental Boilie hook.

Hope this helps, Gareth
