French carping

What is it?

Guests often arrive here at Bletiere and ask what the plants are that grow in the trees looking like a big ball?

And most are surprised when we tell them it’s mistletoe and you will see it everywhere over here.  Having seen the price they charge for it in the UK at Christmas we are tempted to pick a van load and come back and sell it at the market!

Carp fishing France at Bletiere

A broken drive shaft put paid to this week’s mowing

John London is the owner of Bletiere and through this Blog section he’s going to keep a diary of the daily life of a French carp lake owner.

After 4 years lesley and I have a pretty good routine for changeover days on Saturdays & we like to get all the noisy jobs out the way before the next guests arrive.  Last Saturday as always I went to cut the grass and found the drive shaft to the cutter had broke!  One of life mysteries as it was ok when I left it the week before… but it meant no grass cutting this week.

39lb common carp from France39lb of pure gold!

As we only have 2 anglers here this week and Andy was happy for me to have a fish I thought I would give the new completed swim a go for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

After a quite spell (other than watching the pike spawn, pictures on my Blog) one of my rods suddenly tore off and after a really good scrap I managed to bank this beautiful 39lb 4oz common. In the sun it looked absolutely stunning!

Carp fishing in France

Lesley busy at work on the veg plot

John London is the owner of Bletiere and through this Blog section he’s going to keep a diary of the daily life of a French carp lake owner.  If you have any questions for him feel free to post them at the bottom of this post.

With the exceptionally warm weather this week Lesley has been busy on her vegetable plot.  She has been getting the early veg in that she likes to use for the meal as it always taste better than the supermarket  or frozen.  Having had no rain for about 2 weeks now we are hoping for some to get the veg and the grass seed on the new swim going… hopefully it will rain at night and not bother our guests.

While working on the lake today I saw the first swallow of the year.  It didn’t stay long, had a drink and then carried on with its flight, but it’s always good to see the swallows are on the way as it heralds the warm weather.  Later in the day I also saw the first dragon fly, and over in the stream the first grass snake which I think was looking for the frogs.  It’s all a good sign of warmer weather on the way.

Tight lines, John
