At Oakview Lake we monitor our fish stock.  One element of this is the micro-chipping individual fish.  In addition to obvious benefits like security this also allows for quick identification and monitoring of growth rates. Here the Oakview stock pond is used to demonstrate how this is achieved.

Carp fishing in France

Mick Haynes, Stuart King and Stewart (Benny) Price have just finished a record breaking week here at Oakview (11th June 2011)

What makes their catch amazing is that Stuart and Benny only fished days and Mick fished through the night twice only.

Statistics…

Total catch : 54 carp (1241 lb), 5 x 30’s, 39 x 20’s and 9 doubles – a new lake record.Mick Haynes – 43 fish – 985 lb.  New individual angler record.

The catch included a 7lb common which must have escaped the winter netting, Benny kindly moved this to our stock pond.

Interesting extras…

Mick foul-hooked a fish called “No.7”, so he didn’t count it.  This fish would have put his personal tally to over 1,000lb of carp but he wasn’t tempted.  Good on you Mick!

At noon on the 8th of June, Benny had to come to the rescue when Mick had a run on all three rods at the same time.  With Benny’s help, 3 mirrors were safely banked – 22lb 3oz, 23lb 4oz and 28lb 2oz.

Stuart’s catch included 2 different 30’s just minutes apart.

Chance in a zillion…

Benny foul-hooked a jack-pike and in the ensuing commotion it took one of Mick’s rods out.  When they finally landed the poor thing, they found Benny’s hook firmly embedded in the pike’s side with Mick’s hook straight through the eye of Benny’s hook. No doubt never to be repeated !

Tactics that worked…

Mick kindly agreed to reveal his secrets – and a short film showing his winning tactics will be released shortly.

Carp fishing France at OakviewEssential island pruning at Oakview

As most lake owners already know (but perhaps the guests are less aware), once the fishing season is over, the real work starts for the owners.

Essential maintenance jobs start as soon as the last guests leave and carry on practically the whole winter and early spring.  It’s really the only chance that lake owners have for getting the larger jobs done, and it can be said that you really have to get your timing right.  Too early and the grounds are waterlogged, too late and the brambles and thistles have already started to put on a growth spurt.

Each spring here at Oakview one of the jobs that we have to do is to obliterate the growth on the island.  This year we were a little late and the ducks were already nesting underneath the Pampas grass – they were not too happy at being disturbed either, probably because of the 15 eggs they were in the process of hatching!  Luckily we just finished in time.

In any event, the job was done and the island cleared, thankfully without too many daffodils being trampled…..
