Hi Danny,

My wife and I are planning a holiday at Gigantica in late October this year.  Karen is not a great caster, her maximum distance being about 70 yards but she is more comfortable at around 60.  I myself have no trouble casting; with the right setup and a not too unfavorable wind I can manage up to and above 150 yards.  With this in mind, what would be the best swims on the lake for her to fish at this time of year?  I can always fit in around her needs.  I have watched Danny’s video on the swim on the lake but things change and since you are there throughout all the season’s moods, who better to ask.

45.08 late season carp from Gigantica

An October 2010 carp - 45.08, Craig Hendry

I have been perusing the net for baiting tactics but most articles seem to have spring/summer/early autumn in mind.  Given that the fish will be slowing down at this time of year; especially if cold weather has moved in, what baiting tactics would you recommend and how much bait would a single angler need for a weeks session this time of year?  Would the boily approach be best, stringers or small PVA mesh stockings, little and often, or do you think there is any mileage in laying down a carpet of particles?

During the summer it is advocated that the best approach is to find a likely area and bait it, concentrating all three rods in the area waiting until the fish arrive to do the business but is the winter approach the same or would it be better to spread the rods around a little trying to find a pocket of feeding fish?

How well do the fish show at this time of the year?   Most of the waters I fish the carp seems to show well in October and I am a great believer in if you can see fish and reach them you have every chance of catching them!  I am not one for ignoring the water and sleeping the early hours away.  Is there any point in moving to showing fish?

Finally, just how bad can the weather get at this time of year?  We want to make our stay there as comfortable as possible.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Alan

Alan, thank you for the enquiry.

As for casting, do not worry. We advise all our clients that there is no need to fish any further than 60-70 yards. It’s far better to fish effectively at that range than making things very difficult when pushing yourself. We have fixed markers all around the lake so you can get your lines out accurately with no need for a marker float. Throughout the year, 90% of the bait is fed between 60-70yds so the fish are comfortable to visit these areas to feed. There are no ‘better’ swims than any other and all produce good catches if fished well.

As for tactics and baiting strategies for later in the year; I always advise anglers to keep a track on my weekly site update. You can find information as it is happening and, several week prior to visiting me, contact me for the latest info on weather, fish movements and what is or isn’t working.

The fishing at that time of the year is definitely affected by the weather.  Last winter, the cold weather came far earlier than expected and it did have a knock on effect to the fishing after November.  However, previous late seasons have had fair weather and there have been some fantastic captures.

I hope this has answered your questions but feel free to contact me at anytime for additional information.

Danny
