Here’s a great trial which is being carried out by John London at Bletiere

Early in the season every year I get asked;

“What are the carp doing and when are they going to spawn?”

The short answer is we never know when they will begin to spawn because it’s a act of nature which is driven by two main factors; the number of daylight hours and the water temperature. The number of daylight hours necessary is achieved around the middle of April, so after that it’s down to water temperature & of course that’s massively affected by the weather.

Every year I monitor the water temperature and I’ve found that when it reaches about 14 degrees, and stays around that for a couple of weeks, the carp will begin to spawn. But if we get a sharp drop in the water temperature they will stop.

This year I intend to do my normal water temp measurements & I’ll put the results on our Forum (Click here to access). I’ll put it on-line every Wednesday and Sunday until the carp spawn. Of course I can’t guarantee that this will accurately predict spawning, but it will give us all a gauge on when they may start to spawn.

I will put the first reading on today. (Click here to see it) If there is any other information I can add please just ask.

Regards, John
