September 2003 Newsletter

Hello Fellow Carp Fishers

Well the French carp fishing holiday season is drawing to a close now and the nights getting shorter. In fact after weeks of stifling heat waves, one can feel that Autumn is definitely announcing that Winter is just around the corner. I even had frost on my unhooking mat earlier in the week.

The major news this month is the release of our superb 2004 brochure. This classy 48 page full colour catalogue, gives full details of our 32 venues, including glossy photos and quick info. so you can see all you need to know at a glance. I think you'll agree that it is an impressive booklet and available to you free of charge, either by ringing our office or downloading a PDF file from this Website.

The second piece of news is that we will be present at the Carp Society's Winter Conference at Sandown Park. The event will be the last week-end of November covering two days the 29 & 30th. We will be on Stand 59 so please come along and have a chat.

Here then is a round up of some catches from a selection of our venues over the recent weeks.

Le Village

As with many other lakes, the hot August weather made the fishing patchy. Some good hits were made though. French holiday time in August saw a number of French carpers on the water. Pegs 14, 15 & 16 seemed to be the hot spots with the bulk of the carp caught from these areas.

The French Guérin brothers managed 8 thirties and a forty at 40lb 7oz, in their week 30 August to 6 September, from peg 14. They totalled 30 carp of which eleven were 20+ , to 29lb.

Mr Oliver on the next peg 15, during the same week was also in for a good catch landing ten carp, including 4 thirties to 34lb.

Peg 16, with UK carpers Hidson and Grayson, landed over forty carp including six thirties to just over 39lb. Other than a large number of small commons they managed 17 decent carp of which most were 20lb+.

Total for the month was 55 thirties, ten forties and on fifty at 55lb.

Several very big cats were also on the menu with the largest going 96lb 8oz; 92lb 4oz; 72lb 6oz; 55lb & 50lb 6oz. An impressive list of big catfish if ever I saw one!

Ribière Monster  -  51lb 4oz!

Carper Matt Bonner poses with a 51lb 4oz mirror caught from peg 1 on 29th September 2003. The fish was caught using Mainline bait and was part of a 4 fish haul for the angler including carp of 33lb 4oz, 28lb and 22lb. His partner on the session, Marc Hallin, also had a very impressive catch landing 19 fish - one double, 12 twenties to 29lb 8oz with the largest fish going 31lb; 33lb; 33lb 8oz; 34lb and 35lb 8oz. Their successful tactics were PVA bags with Maple 8, Activ 8 and NRG boilies.

The venue has also had a rather unusual resident carp angler over the last few months and his catches really have gone to show what the lake is capable of.

Laurent Amarge from the Paris region, has been on contract work near Limoges for most of the summer and has elected to spend his nights in a bivvy fishing the Ribière.  Fishing from peg 1 initially, and then onto peg 19, he has had some outstanding catches. He has kept very accurate records of his visit which breaks down like this:

Fishing only late evenings, weekends and nights from the 4th August to 7th September he landed 79 carp from 96 runs. The total weight was 838,7kg (which gives an average of nearly 24lb per carp). The largest carp landed weighed in at 41lb. He landed a couple of 20lb grassies and a 30ln catfish too.

The majority of his fish came to our Mainline Fruitella baits. Pop ups proved more effective than bottom baits, with 54 of his runs from a buoyant hookbait.

Les Justices

This popular lake has been producing some nice catches of late.

Alistair Atkinson was on the venue at the beginning of August and despite the owners comments that it was slow fishing he and his partner managed a very creditable 48 carp during their stay.  This included 5 thirties to 35lb, plus 14 twenties to 29lb.

Alistair's technique was to get off his bum and find the fish ... this he certainly did. Significantly he had eight of his fish to 26lb off the top. Proof that it can be done in France, where they don't surface feed ... do they? However, most of his fish fell to the lake special boilies.

Alistair's comments on his holiday were: "We came to France with the hope of beating our personal bests, we both did and I have to say that to catch the amount and quality of the fish at Les Justices was way beyond our expectations"

Marcusans

I was present at the venue last week to see the introduction of some of the new stock that are part of a further injection of carp planned for this year. The owner Jean-Luc added 5 twenty pound plus grass carp to 32lb, plus half a dozen mirrors, the best going just over 30lb.

On the fishing front the return of a more normal weather pattern has curiously slowed the catches somewhat. During my presence at the lake UK carper from Liverpool Doug landed a very nice 35lb mirror from peg 2, and had got amongst some hard fighting fish, most of which were good doubles and twenties. A French angler on peg 8 managed a 34lb grass carp on a popped up bait straight from the lead.

Etang des Brionnais

This charming venue with its lakeside chalets has been the scene of some memorable holidays this year. Although, the fishing has been affected by the heat, some good catches have been made.

Jean-Charles Huckendubler and Eric Lux and their families from Alsace were on the venue for the French mid-August Bank Holiday and had a excellent stay, bagging nearly a 1000lb of carp. The largest was a 36lb 4oz mirror.

Well that's it for this month. See you next month with more Angling Lines Holidays news.
