February 2004 Newsletter

Another new venue to tell you about this month - Les Burons - plus news of re-stocking at several venues.

Gareth

Les Burons - show me a video.

Normandy seems to have a huge number of superb lakes that are just waiting to be discovered.  Most are only two to three hours from the ferry at Caen so access is quick and easy.

Les Burons is just such a lake set in central Normandy, owned and run by Rob and Lin Parrish.

The water is reed-lined around its margins and offers a superb opportunity for anglers to enjoy relaxing fishing in the stunning countryside for which this area of France is famous.  The venue is suitable for groups of four to five anglers and it is offered for exclusive bookings.

Burons has lake side accommodation in the form of a fully equipped 4 berth mobile home, consisting of a dining/lounge area with a convertible bed-settee, one large bedroom with double bed, one smaller bedroom with two single beds, bathroom, including shower and w/c. It makes this an ideal venue for a family holiday.  The lake is stocked with around 100 fish ranging from mid doubles to forty pounds.

Les Justices - Stocking
The winter period is the traditional time of year for stocking carp in France and is indeed the only time that fish are readily available for purchase.

Les Justices, is an established venue, set in a secluded wooded valley in south west France, offering the opportunity for up to four anglers to have an entire lake exclusively to themselves, plus the added comfort of a lovely lakeside mobile home.

It already has a very healthy head of fish and a solid reputation for good catches and this was further bolstered by the introduction of some real lumps to the fishery last month.

The owner Jon Harrison commented:
"The fish were all mirrors between 30 and 40 lbs and were all cracking specimens.  This brings the total stocked this winter to 35 fish continuing our on-going stocking program.  We are now in the very fortunate position of being able to pick & choose individual fish from the suppliers - so obviously we only choose the very best.  We're really looking forward to the 2004 season and seeing many more 30's, 40's and 50's out to Angling Lines Customers!"

Hooked in France - Les Montautiers
Throughout autumn 2003 extensive work was undertaken on the 350 year old "Les Montautiers" lake, repair work that was desperately needed to address water loss problems and the silting up of the lake bed.

Initially the lake was drained and the fish removed to a purpose built stock pond. Work was then begun using a large quarry digger to deepen the silted up shallows and to reinforce the bank sides. The dam wall end was completely rebuilt to prevent the loss of water. After the water had been limed and tested it was time to reintroduce the carp.

So on the last day of January in horrendous weather conditions, bitterly cold and wet, the netting of the stock pond was undertaken. Local help was called in to transport the fish the few yards down the bank to the main lake. The cold and uncomfortable task of winter netting was carried out by the lake owner Lee Thorn and his friend Tony.

With the water temperatures of around 6°c it was two brave men that placed the net for a first sweep of the stock pond. The sweep was successful and around 45-50 carp were moved. The average size was very good at around 25lb with a number of fish over the thirty pound mark, to 36lb, including a 33lb common and a 40lb plus catfish. Also captured in this netting were a number of mad grass carp, up to 25lb. Further nettings over the following few days were a repeat of this one with a further 100plus carp moved over to the fishery the largest just topping the 40lb mark. You can see a short video of the netting here . Five hundred kilos of new stock has also been added to the fishery with an average weight of 20lbs.
