A great competition prize!

The big day was upon us, up at the crack of dawn, common sense prevailed, we packed the car the evening before, good idea it proved to be.

Onto the motorway, down to Dover and then queuing for the ferry. What a shock the ferry company have cameras aimed at your car registration plate and before you arrive at the kiosk a machine has printed out your ticket and you are greeted with a smiling face saying “ Thank you Mr Clements (well hopefully your own name) have a safe journey!”.

Journey enjoyable until we hit the Paris roads, it felt just like another day on our very own M25, all lanes were going nowhere, almost two and a half hours to go about three miles.

The term “When in Rome” came to mind so when planning the route home we asked Chris the owner of Notaires. A far better route was Nouzerines – Tours – Le Mans – Rouen – Bolougne – Calais. Thanks Chris

Upon our arrival we were greeted by Chris and Steph, shown around the gite and the grounds, made to feel really welcome. What a lovely couple.

A wonderful four bedroom Gite (close to the lake) greets you as you arrive on the 75 acre site with three lakes, all holding carp.

One double bedroom downstairs (we used this one), lounge area, dining / kitchen area, satellite TV (Justin was pleased because of the World Cup), DVD Player and comfortable seating, enough for eight people.

Upstairs housed three further bedrooms and a bathroom with shower.

Crockery, pots and pans, everything you need to cook for yourselves during your time at Notaires.

A brand new swimming pool - just the ticket in this really hot weather!

Nouzerines is the local town, less than ten minutes away by car or a nice stroll if you feel up-to it, especially after a full English breakfast. Nouzerines has a nice little grocery store who make lovely cakes and superb bread. There is also a fantastic restaurant serving superb food - well worth a visit.

A supermarket is in Boussac, about twenty minutes away, selling all kinds of food, fruit, vegetables and newspapers. It also has the cheapest diesel for miles and miles.

Arrived later than planned Saturday evening; forced to assist with the unpacking before being released to scour the lake using binoculars. Used the bait-boat and echo sounder to get details of the snags and depths of the middle lake, I don't enjoy walking too far to the swim, so this lake is very handy, Justin says with a smile on his face.
Too tired to set-up, so decided to get a good nights sleep (hoping it may be the only one).
Early Sunday morning well refreshed from a good nights kip - the bivvy, the three rods plus tackle are set up.

Decided to fish three swims under the trees opposite the banked swim, just slightly right of the gite.
Decided to use Special Crab Quest boillies on the recommendation of Chris. I ordered four kilos of their finest 15mm and two kilos of the 20mm boillies, along with two kilos of cooked hemp and two kilos of cooked maize. The hemp and maize are cooked to order, so don't forget to ask Chris a number of hours before you require it. It's fantastic to have fresh bait on tap, well done Chris and Steph.

Having chosen the three swims time to load the bait-boat and offer these carp some grub. Task complete, time to sit back and wait for the action.

Didn't have to wait too long, a superb buzzing of the alarm and the line screaming off the reel!
Took less than ten minutes to get the grass carp in the landing net and what a fine looking fish. Weighed in at 14lbs 2ozs.

Now the technical stuff – right hand rod, blow back rig, Quest 15mm Special Crab boillie with half a pineapple pop up attached.

Heat got too much for us. It was b....y hot. Good excuse to go and watch the football.

Back to the real reason for being here, middle rod blasts off, about fifteen minutes later a nice mirror carp of 14lbs is on the unhooking mat. This fish looks like it hasn't been caught before. Technical info – kd muzza rig, 20mm balanced Special Crab boillie, cork inserted inside boillie.

During the evening and night I was joined by one of the farm cats, it was pleasant company for the both of us.

The cat had experience of watching the fish and I believed that he could tell when a fish was about to be caught even before the alarm went off. He would even enjoy looking out for a bite whilst I had a “catnap”.

Five hours later and an 11lb Mirror Carp is landed on the left hand rod, chod rig, pineapple pop-up, fished in the far margins.

Time for a quick shower and some grub.

Back where I belong, on the bank rods in hand. The remainder of the weeks catches were as listed below:
11lb Mirror Carp, 11lb 8ozs Mirror Carp, 12lb Mirror Carp, 11lb, 8oz Mirror, 16lb Mirror Carp, 15lb Mirror Carp, 12lb Mirror Carp, 14lb 8oz Mirror Carp, 12lb Mirror Carp, 11lb Mirror Carp.

Lost many beasts during the nights, Chris reckoned they were all torpedo shaped Grass Carp, they did scream off at a pace.

Quest Special Crab really does the business on these lakes.

Sorry Justin, that honour goes to Jill, who fished for two evenings and her first fish was a 11lb mirror, her second was a 23lb 2oz mirror caught on a single Quest Bait 15mm Special Crab boillie using a size 14 hook.
The next time Jill tipped her rod was a huge delight a 38lb 4ozs mirror was in the landing net. Once again caught using a single 15mm Special Crab boillie.

It was an absolute delight staying at Notaires for the week, lovely site, superb accommodation, first class and extremely helpful owners, well stocked lake, fresh bait on tap (which is a massive bonus), peace and quiet just the soothing calls of all the animals and birds.

Notaires would suit both serious carp anglers and families alike. The accommodation suits both.
We fished on Alders Lake for an afternoon, this is a superb venue if you prefer a larger lake and a larger specimen.

I have already told some of our carping mates about Notaires. I highly recommend this site to anyone who loves tranquillity and carp fishing together.

Chris, Steph and family were extremely welcoming, accommodating and first class hosts.

I would like to thank Angling Lines (especially Bridget), Quest Baits and of course Chris, Steph and family.
Thanks to all of you for a fantastic prize, a restful, peaceful week and fantastic fishing action.

Look forward to returning next year.
