My Lead Drop Rig
Mar 2012 by Chas Cook

I very much favour heavy leads for carp fishing... you can read my reasoning here.

However, once the heavy lead has done its job and hooked the carp there's no reason to keep it during the fight. That's why I designed this "Lead Drop" rig.

So... here's the component parts needed to make the rigs;

Lead Type A

 Gripper lead, 3oz – 5oz.

Lead Type B

 Distance lead, 3oz – 5oz.

Safety clip intact.

Tail rubber cut at 42o – 45o

Safety clip cut but tab retained as shown.

The end of the clip can be cut at 45o to allow easy passage for tungsten puttied leaders.

Swivel is inserted into the clip.

Tail rubber is pushed on tight.

Lead core should come out of the tail rubber and follow the line of the outside of the clip parallel to the cut tab end.

Then pull everything tight.

Rig fully assembled.

Q-ring attached to swivel.

Stiff boom made of mono leader material attached to the swivel using a single overhand loop knot so the rig can be removed.

The loop knot allows for good movement of hook length when being mouthed by the carp.

Disolvable foam can be theaded onto hook length eliminating all tangles if cast.

Rig Set up 2.

Tail rubber.

Normal inline lead 3oz – 5oz with extended sleeve.

The end of the sleeve is cut at 45o to allow easy passage of the leader through the sleeve.

Low profile fluorocarbon leader shown, but lead core can be used.

Swivel / Long tab end / Q-ring.

Grease tail rubber and push onto extended sleeve.

Attach the leader to the swivel leaving a fairly long tab end to the leader, blobbed with a lighter.

Always grease the knot when tying the leader to the swivel.

Attach the Q-ring through the same eye as the leader.

Grease swivel and insert into lead.

If it is loose within the sleeve, slide the tab end of the leader first and then push in the swivel.  This will tighten it up to give bolt effect on the take from the fish.

After the take, the lead will be dropped.

Hook length stiff boom is lead core.
