Frequently asked questions at Alder

We asked the owner a few frequently asked questions, here's their advice...

How much bait will I need?
More than in the UK, think tens rather than kg’s.

What bait do you recommend?
We sell Quest Baits and our own particles. Only our own particles may be used.

If you supply bait on site, will I be able to get more bait during my stay if I need it?
We supply Quest Baits, we only keep a small stock in hand so it is best to order in advance.
NB. Only our own particle is allowed on site. We supply Partimix, Maize and small feed pellet. Particle is cooked freshly so please order in advance.

Is my UK carp set-up suitable for use at your lake?
Your set-up needs to be suitable for carp in the range 20-50lb and compliant with the lake rules.

What hook size do you recommend?
Go larger than the UK.

What breaking strain of main line do you recommend?
15lb minimum.

What is the surface of the swims - can I use bank sticks?
Earth & stones, bank sticks can be used.

Are any special tactics required?

No, start with rigs you are familiar with.

Do you recommend use of a bait boat?
Bait boats can be advantageous.

Can I drive all the way around the lake in order to unload?
No, but a barrow is provided.

Do you need a fishing licence?
No, the lake is a private, registered lake and no licence is needed.

Is the lake secure? Can we leave our gear on the bankside if we go out?
Anglers have left their gear bankside while going out without incident, but this is at your own risk.

Can we drink the tap water?
Yes, we do.

Do you have UK plug points?
Yes, at the shower/utility.

How far are the nearest supermarket / petrol / tabac?
The nearest supermarket and petrol station is about a 15 min drive away, at our local town of Boussac. There is a fresh bread vending machine in the square at Nouzerines. The tabac is in the square at Boussac.

What will the weather be like on my trip?
Broadly, we are in the centre of France and enjoy the continental climate, this means a cold winter, a short spring and a long hot summer. Autumn is usually pretty nice too.
