Pool Incoming

We are currently in the process of installing a 5m x 3m splash pool with solar heating and surrounding decked area for lounging by the pool. This is located to the side of the gite and overlooking the lake. Pictures below are mid-build, but it will all be stained and finished off with a nice seating area etc before we open for 2020.

Open from the first weekend of May until the end of August (between 10:00 to 21:00). The pool will not be totally private to the gite as the owners reserve the right to use it at times. But what a fantastic way to cool off in the summer months!

Preparations for 2020 season.

As my 2019 season draws to a close I am already busy preparing for 2020, the payment has now been sent to my fish farmer for the new additions for the 2020 season.  I will be visiting my suppliers lakes to personally select two 18 Kg carp (39lb 11oz) that will be delivered this winter, probably in December. (Weather dependant)  With my lake holding two 40lb+ fish already and at least three carp that I know of that are at the 39lb mark it will not be long before there is a greater chance of landing a 40!

I only strip out the small fish on alternate years and this winter will see the the lake fully emptied, young carp will be removed thus leaving the larger fish to benefit from less competition for food. My fish seem to be responding well to the new high protien carp food that I feed them and it will be interesting to see how the new Pike have grown since they went in 12 months ago. I might find the sturgeon too but I suspect he may have fallen to the Cormorants.

The silt in the basin will be reduced but not removed completely, as it is a source of natural food. While the lake is empty I will also be installing an aeration system, this will involve trenching in the pipework (even though its weighted pipe) so as not to potentially foul anglers rigs, siting the diffuser heads and partially burying them so that only the heads are just proud of the lake bed. There are numerous benefits with this system that improve the condition of the lake, quality of the water and the overall environment for my fish.

I would like to install a double width pontoon for the bunker swim too, if there is enough time. The three pontoons I built last winter have proved to be a success amongst the anglers who have fished here this year. But there is a lot of work for me to do already, we'll just have to see how I get on!

Alan & Lindas second visit

Alan and Linda left us this morning with Alan managing to bank 20 fish over a five day period.  Of those fish 11 were over 20lb, ranging from 20lb 8oz up to 29lb 8oz. Plus three carp that tipped the scales at 36lb 8, 32lb 8 and 36lb 8oz.  Pre baiting in the deeper dam end of the lake then fishing PVA bags over the pellet, boilie and particle bed proved to be the method to tempt the fish.

Well done Alan, a very respectable tally given the hot weather.

Grass carp double

For the first time both grass carp came out in the same week, when they were stocked they went in at 14lb and 19lb 12oz, so its always been a little difficult to know which one is which and whether they have gained or lost weight.

Well, this week cleared that up, the smaller of the two is now 15lb 8oz or 16lb depending on whether it was weighed on Garys or Rays scales :-), the larger of the two is now a healthy 23lb 8oz.

We await pictures from Gary for the larger Grass carp.

Water Levels

Just a quick update on the lake level here.  We have have several rainstorms since my last update, these have certainly replenished the water taken by the pompiers and also that lost during the last canicule (heatwave)

A visit from the fire brigade !

Kind of interesting day on Tuesday 9th July, a large area of agricultural land (20 hectares) went up in flames, causing the Pompiers to pull up at ours and drop their big pump into the lake to draw water.

After speaking with the Commander, he advised that nobody had been hurt, the cattle in nearby fields had been moved and he wouldn't take too much water as he understood it’s our business and the potential impact to my fish. I advised it’s not just the immediate risk but it’s a risk until the next significant rains come (as farmers have diverted the source for crops and livestock).

The fire is out thankfully!  The morning after I took a measurement and the level has dropped by 6cm approximately, which has not affected the fishing in any way.  In fact Tony landed a 20lb 12oz Mirror while they were in the process of pumping and refilling one of the appliances!

Levels will be monitored over the next few weeks, but we now have a few storms forecast so any rainfall inbetween the 30 degree sunshine will replace what was taken.

I might pop my drone up to film the damage caused by the fire.

New Lake Record

We are very pleased to see Mark Garcia breaking our lake record with "Stealth" who now weighs in at 42lb 5oz.

There are at least two other fish that I know of that are very, very close to hitting 40lb.
