Aug 2019
Grass carp double

For the first time both grass carp came out in the same week, when they were stocked they went in at 14lb and 19lb 12oz, so its always been a little difficult to know which one is which and whether they have gained or lost weight.

Well, this week cleared that up, the smaller of the two is now 15lb 8oz or 16lb depending on whether it was weighed on Garys or Rays scales :-), the larger of the two is now a healthy 23lb 8oz.

We await pictures from Gary for the larger Grass carp.

Water Levels

Just a quick update on the lake level here.  We have have several rainstorms since my last update, these have certainly replenished the water taken by the pompiers and also that lost during the last canicule (heatwave)

A visit from the fire brigade !

Kind of interesting day on Tuesday 9th July, a large area of agricultural land (20 hectares) went up in flames, causing the Pompiers to pull up at ours and drop their big pump into the lake to draw water.

After speaking with the Commander, he advised that nobody had been hurt, the cattle in nearby fields had been moved and he wouldn't take too much water as he understood it’s our business and the potential impact to my fish. I advised it’s not just the immediate risk but it’s a risk until the next significant rains come (as farmers have diverted the source for crops and livestock).

The fire is out thankfully!  The morning after I took a measurement and the level has dropped by 6cm approximately, which has not affected the fishing in any way.  In fact Tony landed a 20lb 12oz Mirror while they were in the process of pumping and refilling one of the appliances!

Levels will be monitored over the next few weeks, but we now have a few storms forecast so any rainfall inbetween the 30 degree sunshine will replace what was taken.

I might pop my drone up to film the damage caused by the fire.

New Lake Record

We are very pleased to see Mark Garcia breaking our lake record with "Stealth" who now weighs in at 42lb 5oz.

There are at least two other fish that I know of that are very, very close to hitting 40lb.

New stock for 2019

Following yet another let down on my order for large carp, I was very lucky to find a new supplier at very short notice and they were able to provide some top quality, mid-sized carp, not all the fish I was looking for but they certainly came up trumps given the short window of opportunity for transporting the fish to us.

20Lb 1oz Mirror

23lb 5oz Common

24lb 2oz Mirror

24lb 10oz Mirror

25lb 9oz Mirror Called Rusty (dark colouring)

26Lb 5oz Common - Called Bobble (She has a big wart)

New pontoons and rental equipment for 2019

During the winter months I have added three new pontoons which will help with both landing and releasing the carp, especially in the summer months. I have also purchased some new rental equipment that is available at very reasonable rates.

1 x JRC Defender 2 Man Bivvy with Storm Cover.

1 x NGT XL Bedchair.

2 x NGT Giant unhooking cradles ( 115cm x 70cm)

Flash Flood !

Last night (Tuesday 5th June) we were hit by a huge rain storm overnight which dumped 90mm of rainwater on us in less than three hours, the lake rose 35cm and the outlet overflowed as the volume of runoff was too great, thankfully we survived with only very minor damage, but we did have a couple of leaks in the gite due to damaged tiles. (This was rectified the next day)

No fish were lost, all the damage has now been repaired and Fraser the fisherman who was here at the time was catching fish on the Wednesday, despite the high water level and overall cloudness of the water.

This was an unprecendented amount of rainfall and not really what we expected at this time of the year, but rest assured normal service has been resumed!
