The Field Tester&#8217;s Role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jim Kelly explains common issues when field-testing completely unknown lakes, and why the majority don&#8217;t make it on to the Angling Lines books&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Why Are Some Chosen And Some Not?\u00a0<\/strong><strong>The Selection Process<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Angling Lines has a fine portfolio of lakes catering for the needs of most carp anglers, but how did the list evolve? \u00a0Is there some kind of selection process or can anyone with a French lake be placed on the list?<\/p>\n<p>The usual process is that\u00a0a\u00a0lake owner approaches ALines and after an\u00a0initial phone discussion, providing the team\u00a0think a venue may have\u00a0potential, one of the management team\u00a0goes to meet the owner and have a good look at the lake\u00a0and facilities. \u00a0Only the best lakes are selected and successful lakes have to tick numerous boxes, some\u00a0of which are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be in a good location<\/li>\n<li>have a suitable stock of carp that will interest English carp anglers<\/li>\n<li>may be\u00a0suitable for a family with good accommodation<\/li>\n<li>have a good owner, someone who will be able to preserve the Angling Lines reputation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many lakes do not make the grade and are rejected at this stage. \u00a0However, if a lake appears to have potential then a pair of field testers are sent to confirm that the lake is a viable proposition&#8230; &amp; that&#8217;s often when I enter the process.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21211\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21211\" class=\"wp-image-21211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/brie.jpg\" alt=\"How to create the perfect carp fishery in France\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/brie.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/brie-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/brie-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/brie-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">One that did make the grade &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/venue\/brie\" class=\"kblinker\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"More about Brie &raquo;\">Brie<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Field Testing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You may think that field testing is a wonderful thing to do and sometimes you would be correct. \u00a0However, when arriving at the lake it is often like having a blank canvas as there are so many unknowns.<\/p>\n<p>For example, what are the stocking levels? \u00a0Some owners exaggerate both the stocking density and the size of the fish. \u00a0Hence gauging bait, baiting levels and location can be hit and miss to say the least. \u00a0Other considerations include issues such as are nuisance species present e.g. crayfish or poisson chat? \u00a0Sometimes we&#8217;ve been\u00a0told that that there are none only to arrive and find that in fact there are loads! \u00a0We&#8217;ve arrived at lakes where all the facilities are supposed to be complete and they haven\u2019t even been started! \u00a0And of course, there is always the pressure to catch. \u00a0One cannot really relax until a few fish have been caught.<\/p>\n<p>So although it is a wonderful thing to do, because sometimes you can fish an absolute gem, on other occasions things can be difficult to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Field testing is a fact finding mission and depending on the findings, the lake could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>rejected as not suitable for an angling holiday<\/li>\n<li>accepted, but there are some problems that need to be rectified before customers\u00a0arrive<\/li>\n<li>accepted, but things that could cause difficulties are put in the lake write-up e.g. crayfish are present or a bait boat is essential etc.<\/li>\n<li>accepted because it is perfect!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_21206\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21206\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/picture-9.jpg\" alt=\"How to make a successful carp fishing lake\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/picture-9.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/picture-9-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.anglinglines.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2014\/09\/picture-9-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">My idea of the perfect lake<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a few things we&#8217;ve found in the past\u00a0and potential fixes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nuisance species such as Poisson chat or crayfish; unfortunately we&#8217;ve turned up at venues where we have been categorically informed there are no chats or crayfish only to find that they are abundant &#8211; but that&#8217;s our job &#8211; we go to ensure there are no nasty surprises for you. \u00a0We now go prepared even when told there are none. \u00a0 Providing they are known about they are not normally a major problem and Angling Lines have produced an informative video to help anglers combat the problem (you can watch it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=roR4mMX8uGc\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). \u00a0I personally use 22mm heavy Arma mesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The venue is more like a bomb site than a fishing lake! \u00a0Obviously this can usually be put right. \u00a0A lake that fell into this category was taken on due to its stunning location and the size of the carp, otherwise it would have been rejected.
