News from Mas Bas Main Lake

Nov 2011

We welcome 2 new arrivals, 18th Nov

This week the Main Lake welcomed two new arrivals, a lovely 25lb mirror and a very pretty  17lb 8oz red carp.

Lets hope they both settle in well to add even more excitement to next season's fishing.

The big willow gets a haircut!, 10th Nov

With the temperature still up around 20° in the afternoon, the south west remains the warmest area of France.

Making the most of this Indian summer Gilles decided to tackle a big outside job and called in Ivan the tree ‘hairdresser’.

He definitely made his mark on the trees around willow cottage, which were getting very tall and cut out too much light from this area.

Now we have to finish the task of clearing up before we tackle the next big winter job of emptying  the lakes and counting the stock.

Winter update, 1st Feb

The waters at Mas Bas are ghostly still as I write , its hard to believe that the sun will be back to magically transform things. In the early morning, the temperature this week has been well down below freezing as far as –10° some days.

The carp will be coping well as gilles has been feeding them every day, even during the cold snap, as the warm afternoon sun kindly melts the the ice on the east edge of the lake. With such encouragement to gain weight, we have high hopes the new batch of 30’s added at the end of october will have settled in as well and will providing even greater sport for the coming season.

Improvements to Willow Cottage are about to start in order to extend the season beyond 'just the summer months'. The downstairs bedroom which is next to the dam wall gets a damp fusty smell from time to time. In dry summers its fine but if we have rainy spells it becomes a problem ocasionally.

Unfortunately all the bamboo has to be dug out from the lake side of the cottage so that the wall can be damproofed from the outside. So we’ll just have to lose that ‘tropical' feel outside for the extra comfort inside.

As soon as winter shuffles off, a new liner will be fitted to the swimming pool at Lake House, and then the usual team of painters, plumbers and gardeners move in and help us get ready for the season.

Hope perhaps to see you there?
