Weather at Alder

Overview

The first time you drive along the track from the farm, stop and turn to face Alder it’s almost one of those fist in the air moments.  YES!!!!!  As you slowly descend and the carp lake comes fully into view you know you've made the right decision, you're really going to enjoy this week's carp fishing in France. 

Yes, the lake has history; it's pre Napoleonic.  It’s beautiful; lying in a deep bowl surrounded by woods and rolling fields.  It’s peaceful; located in one of the least populated areas of France miles from major roads and railways.  But most of all it has atmosphere in buckets; it’s a distinct pleasure just being there.

Olly Copeland & Dan Woods spent their French carp session on Alder in May 2011 as part of a party of 6 carp anglers who caught 148 carp in total. Their comments were;

The Carp Lake

The 10 acre carp lake accommodates up to 5 carp anglers giving lots of space and allowing the freedom to move swims.  Fishing is from two sheltered banks where swims have been cut into the treeline and from the dam wall.  

Almost hidden from view by the mature oaks, chestnuts and of course alders, the carp lake sits in a natural bowl.  Depths vary from a few inches to 15 feet, whilst the bottom is a fascinating combination of gravel, silt and clay. Weed is not a problem here.

Two streams enter the lake in the bays on either side of the heavily wooded no carp fishing area. The shallows surrounding this area provide some great carp holding features in the daytime and a thrilling opportunity to stalk your prey... real exciting carp fishing in France

The Carp

After draining the carp lake in 2005 stocking took place in '06 and '09 with incredible deep bodied Royale carp.  These carp are triploids and don't breed so there's no small carp present - currently the smallest carp weigh in the region of 20lb with the largest carp well in excess of 40lb. 

With almost 300 of these exciting carp the lake has the potential to produce some fantastic carp fishing.  

Just look at these extracts from the 2011 catch returns;

 “4 of us caught around 115 mirror carp plus over 25 grass carp”

 “2 x 40lb+ carp, biggest 45.5lb, 11 x 30lb+ carp, 40 odd 20's. Total of 78 carp landed during the week”

There are no poisson chat and the crayfish are kept at bay by a 50lb catfish.  There's a bottle of champagne waiting for the first angler to land the catfish!

The Facilities

The carp lakes position in the middle of such unspoilt countryside makes it impossible to connect to electricity and mains water, so the facilities are basic and more importantly environmentally sensitive.  The low flush toilet system purchased specially from Canada solves one problem and in the long term generates compost. The low flush is provided by a bucket of water from the carp lake, which is provided by of course environmentally friendly carp angler power!

In a separate cabin there is a gas cooker. Fresh water is fetched down from the farm house in containers. Lighting is currently provided by gas lamps.

The main toilet, shower and freezer facilities are located at the owner’s farm which is about a 5 minute walk away.

The local village is very close by for the essential French bread and pastries and there's a large supermarket around 15km away.

Meals

To make your carp fishing in France more comfortable you can take advantage of a meal package here.  Price is £100 per person per week consisting of:

• a tasty breakfast roll packed with bacon or sausage, mushrooms and egg and tea/coffee
• 2 course dinner with bottle of beer or glass of wine

A lunchtime sandwich roll can be delivered to swim for an additional 3€ per day.

Please note; if you book the food package you will be asked to pay a 10% deposit to Angling Lines and the balance to the lake in Euros when you arrive. Please note that due to fluctuations in the exchange rate the balance you pay when you arrive may not equate exactly to the remaining 90% in £’s sterling – it may be slightly more or less due to a change in the exchange rate.
