Carp delivery

Today, our fish farmer delivered the first batch of our winter carp order. We received 11 mirror carp between 20 and 25lbs. The next delivery will be between Christmas and the New Year and we have requested some bigger ones. They all have beautiful scale patterns and will make for great photos when they are caught next season.

Week 21 24/8-31/8/2019

This week, father and son, Tim & Dan returned to Barringtons and fished swim 3. Despite the temperatures being in the 30's all week, they landed 12 carp including a 34lb grass carp and 2 other 30lb+ mirrors. It was lovely to see them again.

Our Belgian friend Frank and his wife, Patricia stayed in the chalet for the week. We used to meet up with them in France, Belgium and Luxembourg several times a year when we were a bit younger and fish public waters and canals. In his 'heyday', he was a top Belgian carp angler and one of his photos was on the front of a Benelux fishing magazine, Beet, in 1988. Frank hasn't fished for carp for 11 years since being diagnosed with MS but after coming to terms with his disability, he now goes match fishing in some Belgian clubs every week.

We took the ramps from our trailer to give access to the veranda and put blocks of wood under the feet of the bed to raise it to the same height as the wheelchair and also added grab handles in the shower. Barry helped Patricia with lifting the wheels over the threshold when Frank needed to go indoors and also positioning him onto the swim.

Frank fished during the days in the chalet swim under an umbrella and used Barry's rods etc as he only has match gear now. He used his own bait, which is similar to our Bazza Bait apart from the flavour, as he and Barry designed the base mix together over 25 years ago.

From this swim and with Frank's 18mm boilies, Barry had 2 30lb+ carp during the nights and on Wednesday afternoon, Frank caught a 37lb common. Barry laid the cradle on Franks lap and took some photos of Franks first carp for 11 years.

It was a tiring but happy week seeing Tim and Dan again and also spending time with Frank and Patricia.

Work party 10-17 August 2019

We decided to have a work party to clear some of the lily pads. John had ordered 2 special digging tools for using to dig up the root systems. Then he and Dave were unable to come so he posted the tools to Daz.

Daz, Sander and Priscilla arrived on the Saturday morning and spent the day setting up camp and recovering from the journey.

On Sunday, Barry, Daz and Sander took the tools, some dustbins and the boat and started working on the pads between swim 3 and the inlet. During the week, the small clusters in front of several swims were also cleared. Not all of the pads have been removed as the fish need a refuge from the sun and also to divide the lake between swims 3 and 4. They also found some tree debris and removed it. It was jolly hard work and it was a blessing that it wasn't blazing sunshine that week. We had a few showers of rain too.

Priscilla and Yve also got in the water in waders and cleared the water plants from in front of swims 6 and 7.

As they were only fishing at night, Sander caught one carp of 8kg but Daz landed 25 carp. On the last morning he had 3 rods go off at once and landed 2 of them. No fish photos though!

Than you to our helpers xx

Heatwave in June

The month of June was the hottest June in France on record. We have had temperatures up to 39 degrees and most days in the month were in the 30's. Extremely draining for us, the anglers and potentially dangerous for the precious fish. We are already using the pump to aerate the lake and monitoring the oxygen levels and water temperature.

Anglers have been finding it challenging to catch the carp with this heat and the catch reports reflect this.

The first week of June we had friends looking after the lake for us to enable us to do some maintenance on our house and garden. They caught 28 fish to 36lb6oz, 11x 20's and 9 x 30's.

We then had Rod and Luke who had rented the chalet and had not fished in France before. With help from Barry they landed 6 carp to 31lb6oz, 3 each.

Our first ever clients returned to Barrington's. Mario and his son's Jeffery and Remco, and their friends Roel, Nick and Yorick spread around the lake but the fish were not obliging and they only landed 5 carp between them. Mario always makes his special soup on the first night and we were invited to join them at mealtime again.

Our final June clients were Ray and Dave. They were in their words 'French Fishing Virgins'. They both managed to land a new personal best - Ray had a 31lb6oz mirror called Necklace and Dave had a 33lb common called Raggedy. They landed 9 carp in total and were very appreciative of our assistance with the fishing and also of the food package.

During the month the wildlife is still showing in abundance and the birdfeeder is well used by woodpeckers, tits and a pair of chaffinch. The red squirrel scampers up the oak tree outside of the chalet window and there are wild boar and Muntjac deer in the woods and in the fields around us. We have found that a lot of anglers are also keen wildlife watchers too.

Week 2 - 13-20 April 2019

Bernie, Brian, Nigel and Richard came to Barrington's for their first French fishing trip. They landed 14 carp to 35lb8oz and all 4 had a 30 and all had personal bests. They rented the chalet but also had the food package and enjoyed the banter with Barry. They fished from various swims during the week and used the chalet for get-togethers and mealtimes.

The weather was changeable, starting sunny and then some rain, frosts most mornings and then finishing with a few sunny days. Towards the end of the week the fish began spawning.

Work Party March 2019 - part 2

The second week of the Work party and Daz and Byron had returned to England so it was just Sander, Barry and Yve.

We put the awning on the front of the chalet as in the summer months the sun shines onto the veranda making it uncomfortable to dine in comfort in the evenings. This should keep the blazing sun out of peoples eyes nicely.

We started on the big clear up over at the inlet end of the lake where the storms in early March had brought down some of the trees. By cutting off the trunks near to the base we managed to get 6 of the root systems back down into their craters which improved the appearance of the area no end. Two of the trunks we have used sections of to build the base of a bridge over the inlet and topped it with planks. Some of the trunks have been cut into shorter lengths and used to edge a defined footpath from the bridge to the trail towards swim 4. The rest will eventually be chopped up for firewood for our wood burners at home and at the lakeside chalet.

We are very grateful to Sander, Daz and Byron for their help in making the improvements to our lake.

Work Party March 2019 catch report

Daz, Byron and Sander helped us out in March, building bridges and jetty's and tidying up the site. They fished some nights and landed 21 fish between them (Sander was with us for 2 weeks and the others only for 1).

There are only a few photos as Daz doesn't bother taking photos and Byron only took 2 fish photos.

Work party March 2019 - part 1

The first week of the March work party saw a lot of wood work, wet weather early in the week but sunny and dry for the second half. Frosty mornings still though.

The new chalet swim had a wooden sided gravel path built to a wooden platform, swim 6 had a jetty built on the right hand side of the swim to enable anglers to respond better when fish kite to the right, and swim 3 has a new bridge to the spit so that anglers do not have to trample through the undergrowth if their fish kites to the left and toward the inlet area.
