News at Forest Lodge Lake
Closure in 2019
After the unprecedented heatwave this summer, Guilluame who runs Forest lodge lake has been forced to close the lake for the rest of 2019. It will be available for fishing again in Spring 2020.
The lake is sited in a wonderful huge forested park where several lakes including Augustin lake are also sited. There is a very large stock of carp in a third much larger lake and as the water levels have fallen, a decision was made to safeguard the larger lake. So the carp from Forest Lodge have been moved to a second lake where water has also been pumped. This has now safeguarded the stocks from both lakes for next year.
So 2020 should see a new improved Forest lodge lake as the carp will all be returned and with the lake having lain fallow for a few months any poisson chat previously present should no longer prove to be in existence.
When the previous stock are returned in 2020, some small grass carp will also be introduced as well to manage any weed, setting the lake up for its best year yet.
Success on Swim 3
Last week was on fire! Swim 3 had many runs (around 63 runs with two carp over 45lb and a beautiful koi!) Message from the customer - "many thanks for the great fishing holidays!"
Winter update & Additional stockings
In total this winter saw 170 new carp between 17-45lb in Forest Lodge Lake. Guillaume has also stocked 7 carp over 45lb since January. You can see more of these photos in the fish gallery.
Alongside this, some small grass carp, pike and black bass were added to help manage the lake ecosystem.
At the beginning of the winter the carp were put into a stock lake whilst the lake was drained and left empty for 45 days to remove the poisson chat.
Now the total stock of carp in Forest Lodge sits at approximately 350 carp.
This should mean some fantastic fishing in 2019!
Introduction of Pike
This winter we released a number of pike into both Augustin and Forest Lodge Lake. This will help to control the population of small carp which spawn each year, if left unchecked these can become a nuisance and hinder the growth of the more mature stock of carp in the lake.
Lake Netting & Additional Stocking
This month has seen Forest Lodge Lake drained and poisson chat removed.
Following this an additional 21 new carp between 27-41lb have been introduced to the lake, part of an ongoing stocking programme.
Below are a few of the photos, you can see the rest in the gallery.
Plans for Winter 2018
This November the plan is to drain and net the lake. The stock of carp will be held in a temporary lake and quick lime will be applied to control the poisson chat population and weed. This should mean that the issues we saw with poisson chat and weed this summer during the worst of the hot weather will not reoccur.
There is also a planned additional stocking of an extra 200 carp over 18lb to 45–50lb.
A population of small grass carp will be added to control the weed throughout the year also.
Poisson Chat
Owner Guillaume has informed us that they have noticed poisson chat present in the lake over the last few weeks. He has asked us to pass this on to upcoming anglers so you can come prepared – the usual pop-ups, meshing baits or using fake corn is often the best way to fish when they are active. If you’d like more tips on combating Poisson Chat there are several videos covering the subject here. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch, the lake is otherwise fishing well considering the high temperatures we have been experiencing, which has also brought along the usual weed beds. Unfortunately as this is the lake’s first summer open for fishing there is little we, or the owner, could have done to anticipate their presence. They certainly were not present in any numbers to our knowledge at the beginning of the season. However of course, it is the warmer months where they become more prevalent and the conditions this year have been perfect – many of our venues are seeing the same issue. |
