Les Vaux Rules

The following rules are intended for the welfare of the fish, the venue and fellow anglers. Vaux is operated as a friendly environment, not as a regime, but we do expect anglers to co-operate in following these rules

  • Up to 4 anglers at the lake are allowed a maximum of 4 rods each at any time. 5 anglers are allowed a maximum of 3 rods each at any time. Rods must not be left unattended at any time
  • No fixed lead, death rigs, tether or bent hook rigs are allowed - lines will be checked! Rigs must allow fish to free themselves from the lead in the event of breakage. Please use safe rigs making sure that the lead set-up can slide over any shock leader knot
  • Lead core leaders are not permitted (because of their misuse)
  • Line must be a minimum of 15lb (7kg) when carp fishing and a minimum of 8lb when float fishing. Braided line can be used provided it incorporates 1m safety tubing behind the lead
  • Hooks are the angler’s choice, although the lake preference is for barbed or micro barbed hooks. A single hook only is to be used, no multiple hooks and no bent hooks
  • Hook links should be a minimum of 15lb
  • Large unhooking mats must be used and wetted before use. If you don’t have a large unhooking mat then one can be hired for £5.00 per week. Unhooking mats must be in place when taking photographs
  • Landing nets must be 42inch minimum. If you do not have a large landing net, then one can be hired for £10 per week. If it is broken or damaged during your hire, the cost of replacement will be deducted from the security deposit
  • Sacking of any fish is strictly forbidden. Fish may not be retained either in sacks or keep nets and are to be released without delay, in best conditions
  • Unfortunately due to bad preparation of particles and home-made baits by some anglers, only professionally prepared particle baits and nuts (i.e. by Quest Baits, Dynamite Baits, Hinders, etc) are allowed and only in moderation. No other particle baits will be allowed, except tinned sweetcorn.
  • Boats and swimming are strictly forbidden. Baitboats are allowed
  • Please leave no litter, cigarette ends or line; bins will be provided for all your litter. Please do not throw anything (except, of course, bait!) into the water, including stones from the paths
  • The cutting of trees or degradation of the natural vegetation is strictly forbidden
  • No lighting of fires is allowed around the lake. A barbecue is provided by the owners which is only to be used in areas designated by the owners
  • No radios are allowed
  • Please do not use the bankside as a toilet. If you do you are liable to be asked to leave immediately without compensation

GENERAL

  • The gîte will be available from 2.00pm on the day of arrival and must be vacated by not later than 10.00am on the day of departure
  • Vehicles must be parked in the car parking area except for unloading/loading and must not be allowed to block the access road at any time as it is a right of way for use by farmers and the local community
  • The angler is responsible for his family and his guests and for any damage they may cause. The gîte is no more than 2m from the lake so children must be accompanied by an adult at all times
  • A 200 euro security deposit will be asked for at the start of your holiday. The equivalent in sterling will be accepted. This will be refunded in full at the end of the holiday provided everything in the house and lakeside is left in order and there are no breakages or damage. Please leave the house as clean and tidy as when you arrived. If extra cleaning hours are required they will be charged and taken from the deposit
  • No refund will be given for an early departure
  • The owners cannot be held responsible for any theft or damage to personal property anywhere on the premises or for any accident or loss
  • A lock-up is provided in the Mill where all fishing gear, including wet clothing and made-up rods if required, may be stored, but all items will be left at the angler’s own risk. The owners will not be responsible for any items left in the lock-up
  • A freezer is available in the Mill specifically for anglers’ bait
  • A kettle, cups etc are available in the lock-up for lakeside hot drinks
  • There is an area at the top of the lake which is reserved for the fish and for wild-life. This area, together with certain other areas, will be pointed out on your arrival as strictly out of bounds to everyone at all times
  • No dogs are allowed except by prior arrangement with the owners
  • Necessary maintenance and grass-cutting will have to be carried out by the owners periodically; anglers and their families are requested to be as tolerant of this as the fish now are!!!
  • For the benefit and consideration of all our visitors and because it can be a fire hazard, we would respectfully point out that smoking is not permitted in the gîte and would ask that all cigarette ends are placed in the tubs provided in the garden area
  • Duvets and pillows are provided, but please bring bed linen (sheets, pillowslips, duvet covers), plus towels, tea towels and dishcloth. If required, bed linen can be supplied for a small additional charge of 8 euros per bed, per week – please contact us.
  • Under no circumstances are duvets and pillows to be removed from the gîte and must not be used either lakeside or in bivvies
  • Drainage is into a private fosse septique. Please do not dispose of any materials into the system other than toilet paper and do not use any products containing bleach or anti-bacterial products as they are harmful to the micro-organisms in the fosse. Please also let the owners know if any member of your party is on a course of anti-biotics so that we can re-start the system

FISHING TACKLE - Answers to some of the Most Frequently Asked Questions

To give you the best possible chance of achieving the best possible results when fishing our lake, we offer a guide to the tackle which should be considered. We have compiled this list as a guide only – experienced anglers will obviously have their own favourite tackle items & methods.

Reel
- the single most important factor is the quality of the fishing reel. You should bring with you the best that can be afforded, with a smooth clutch mechanism and incorporating as much line capacity as possible. Bait runners are not a necessity.

A good POD System
- because we have platforms and hard banks.

Quality Swingers
- heavy Euro Swingers are not ideal for fishing our lake because we often need to fish to single beeps and drop-backs.

Carp leaders (if used)
- Minimum 25lb nylon. Leaders must be capable of being safely used with either inline leads (see below) or safety clips, whichever is used

Leads
– We recommend Fox In-line flat pear combi-leads, 2.5oz through to 5oz

Rig foam, PVA bags and Funnel Web systems are all successfully employed at this venue

Hooks
– We recommend Teflon coated, Long Shank 10, Wide Gape, B 6 and 10, barbed and barbless

Baitbands
- Gardner 3.2mm (1/8")
