For example, Sky Lake is just over three hours' drive from Calais yet is home to carp weighing over 80lb, proving you don't have to travel the length of France to target exceptional fish.


That said, travelling further south does have its advantages. You'll often discover quieter, less well-known lakes that receive less fishing pressure. The climate also becomes warmer as you head south, which many anglers enjoy, particularly during spring and autumn trips. In addition, some fisheries further from Calais offer lower weekly prices to help offset the extra travelling distance.
