Overview

Are you looking for a French water that has the potential to smash your PB?  Margot has established itself as one of the premiere big fish waters in France and definitely has the potential to send you home with aching arms and a very large smile on your face.  With its massive commons and mirrors to over 60lb, grass carp to over 50lb, koi carp to over 30lb, cats to well over 100lb and even specimen Zander, there’s a target here for everyone! This is premier league carp fishing in France.

I have been to Margot several times & thoroughly recommend the place to anyone looking for big carp but with runs too.  To me it is a lake of dreams.  My personal tally for the week was - 52 carp, made up of 1 x 65lb 8oz, 1 x 50, 11 x 40s, 24x 30s and the rest 20s and only 3 carp under 20.

The Carp Lake

Situated in the Western Loire, Margot is close to the historic cities of Le Mans, Angers and Tours, and is only 2¾ hours drive from the port of St. Malo.  Its combination of rural tranquillity and massive stock of very large fish has made it a very popular destination for specimen anglers for years. 

It’s around 19 acres with 8 flat pegs for up to 8 anglers and you can book the lake exclusively should you wish.  

It’s a relatively shallow lake (2 to 8 feet) with a clay/fine silt bottom. Drag a marker float and lead across the bottom and you will soon locate the hard gravelly areas polished clean as the carp feed. Bait boats can be an advantage especially in shallower swims.

The maximum distance you'll probably need to cast is under 100 yards but many fish get caught within 30 yards of the bank.

The Carp

Margot is owned by one of France’s most respected fish farmers, Michel Bigot, so as you can imagine the carp stocks are remarkable.  Put quite simply he has readily available what most lakes just cannot get their hands on... an almost limitless supply of big carp offering you some of the very best carp fishing in France.

To give a feel of the prolific fishing at Margot, we analysed every single catch over a consecutive 13 week period to June 2012.

76 anglers caught an astounding total of over 28,000lb of fish.

Carp: 734 banked, total weight 23,375lb & an amazing average size of 32lb;

• 3 x 60's
• 12 x 50's
• 88 x 40's
• 342 x 30's
• 262 x 20's (142 of which were 25lb +)
• 27 x under 20's

Koi Carp: 15 - weighing a total of 344lb, largest 34lb

Cats:  11 - weighing a total of 607lb, largest 135lb

Grass Carp: 157 - weighing a total of 4,225lb and comprising 1 x 50.04, 22 x 40's, 38 x 30's, 48 x 20's and 48 x under 20's

Zander: largest 9lb 2oz

The Facilities

There are excellent facilities at the lakeside including a large cabin for the use of anglers containing an eating area, full kitchen, and an English style toilet & shower. The tap water is mains water and perfectly safe to drink. 

Outside there’s BBQ facilities and a gazebo that will seat everyone on the lake for dinner - very convenient to catch up on the days captures.  

There are three boats on site which are available for your use.

The shops are easily reached with a mini-market within 2 minutes and a hypermarket only 10 minutes away.

Michel Bigot has arranged with the local baker to visit Margot every morning, except Wednesday, with fresh bread, cakes, croissant etc.  Anglers will also be able to order Pizzas for collection in the evening at the bakery.
