Charlie Catches Cat and Breaks Juniors Lake Record!, 18th Aug

In his own words…

“In the daytime, I managed to catch a roach on a corn in the margins; I then decided to dead-bait it when the evening came. A gentle underarm cast further down the near margin towards Gate Corner saw the dead-bait drop about fifteen foot from the bank.

At four in the morning the following day, the rod belted off. Head-torch on, I sprinted out of my bivvy and struck into the fish. After about half an hour battle she began to weaken and with the net out of reach and my friend Louis fast asleep, I was forced to place the rod on the ground with the bait-runner on and sprint to wake Louis up so he could net the monster. Shouting him during the first twenty or so minutes of the fight was unsuccessful so I was forced to smack his bivvy. I felt bad for doing this however as he came out in a huge panic not knowing what was going on. After dreaming he was being robbed, his reaction to my wakeup call was quite hilarious. After he calmed down, he sorted the net out and we safely managed to net the large cat, weigh it and take some good photos before it releasing it back into the depths of La Gléhias!”

Just for the record, 16 year old Charlie Halliday from Norfolk, here for the week with his parents (midwife Debbie and retired RAF explosives engineer Chris) and his old school buddy Louis Garrett, broke the Junior Lake Record Catfish at 04:00 on the morning of Thursday 14th August 2014 with a stunning 43lber.

Charlie was presented with a personalised bottle of cider for his efforts to take home as a memento.

Well done Charlie! :)

Monsters from the Deep!!!, 5th Jul

Peter Holgate and Mark Morgan fished here last week and witnessed the strangest behaviour of Lake Lauren I have ever seen. The Cats and the Carp literally split the lake in two! The Carp took to the shallows whilst the Catfish took over the deep end.

On arrival, Mark said that he would like to land a big moggy at some point in his week here, so I advised that he take the deeper end of the lake as very few are banked in the shallows due to the snaggy nature of the far bank; we could never have predicted the way his week would go!

Mark found Cat after Cat, and could not find a single Carp till about Wednesday evening when the weather became more overcast and seemed to mix the fish up a bit. In his week here, he hooked into a total of fifteen catfish of which he managed to land eight between 18lb 5oz and 54lb 7oz, including two previously unknown 30’s and two 50’s!

The latter part of the week saw Mark catch up on the Carp numbers as the Catfish eventually went a bit quieter and the Carp started to go back to normal and spread out over the whole lake. He managed to bank seven Carp to 30lb 9oz by the time he wound the rods in to go home.

On the other end of the lake, Peter didn’t struggle at all to get through to the Carp as he banked a total of fifteen between 13lb 6oz and 37lb 14oz, plus a few he lost early in the week.

I’ve never seen anything like it! It was as if there was a wall under the water separating the two ends of the lake, I was so glad to see Carp coming from the deep by the end of the week and so was Mark!

Quest Baits Magnum Duo Now Available Here!, 1st Jul

From July 2014 Quest Baits Magnum Duo will be available for sale here at La Gléhias. This will complement our already very successful range of Lake Boilies which include; Rahja Spice, Special Crab and Chilli Chocolate, all of which are available as 5Kg 20mm.

Magnum Duo is effectively Magnum White but comes in two colours (Magnum White and Magnum Dark).

Below is the promotional write up for Magnum White taken from the Quest Baits website.

This bait came out as the most attractive to carp in the 2012 Carpology Monster Tank Test when put up against 10 other bait companies’ boilies!
The independent test was carried out on the carp by James Anderson B.S.c. (Hons).
The carp chose their favourite - what more can we say? But here goes...
Magnum White is very much a trip down memory lane. How things change in the bait world, in the early 80’s everyone wanted milky cream type baits. Well, this one is just that a lovely rich cream aroma emitting from the white base which as in most of the Quest Baits range is very much a 12 months of the year bait. Magnum White utilises ingredients which are easily digested even in the coldest of conditions.

A nice complex cream flavour and stimulator blend which due to the base mix ingredients used starts working as soon as it enters the water. A good leak off followed by a longer more lingering leak of attraction together with added essential oils to retain a long term taste to the bait. Everyone we showed the bait to pre-release instantly fell in love with the flavour. You smell it and you simply know you are going to catch.

They have produced so many winter fish from a variety of waters on their first use that we saw little point in holding them back. Don’t however write these off as a winter only boilie. Magnum White is a mix that Shaun has resurrected from his past and be assured it’s a brilliant warm water bait too.

So many anglers these days get brain washed into thinking they must use fish meal type baits in the summer that the carp come across so few of this type of bait.

Since its release in 2012 Magnum White quickly became Quest Baits biggest selling bait knocking Rahja Spice off the top spot, a position it had held for 6 years.

If it’s something totally different from the norm you want to give you the edge then look no further.

Bait prices are as follows;

5Kg Rahja Spice 20mm 60e
5Kg Special Crab 20mm 60e
5Kg Chilli Chocolate 20mm 60e
5Kg Magnum Duo 20mm 60e
5Kg Carp Pellet 5mm 12e
5Kg Prepared Maize 12e
1Kg Prepared Maize 4e

Cabin Now Moored in Stump Lagoon!, 26th May

The Floating Cabin was built on the closest side of Lake William (Blackberry Walk) due to the ease of access with building materials but the plan has always been to moor it a little way off the bank in Stump Lagoon. The windows and solar panel were all positioned for optimal use when the cabin was parked up in this aspect.

Last week I was able to get stuck into the mooring construction and after a couple of days of work we were ready to move the Cabin across the lake to its permanent position, all we needed was a day when the wind was blowing in the right direction to help us get it there. Luckily we only had a two day wait for this!

All I need to do now is fit the chain hand rail and get the grass to grow back on the bank where it was cleared of bramble and trees to build the mooring.
