Overview
The Villefond carp are growing and growing fast! The average weight of fish being caught is well into the thirties with 4 x 50lb+ carp, at least 35 x 40lb fish and countless 30lb+ fish. Villefond is not a runs water; it is a serious big fish water. It is a developing, growing fishery, but the average size of carp is already massive. In fact it is only the fish stocked in 2011 which are less than 30lb. They are wising up quickly and will really test your angling skills. Get your presentation right, encourage the fish to feed confidently, and you will experience some amazing and memorable carp fishing.
Motorway links are excellent and the drive down from Calais is just over 5 hours, or around 3½ hours from St Malo.
For example Martin & Josh Bennett fished here in March 2011 taking 24 carp - 7 different 40's including Arthur at 49lb & Max at 42.14 and one they named Bennett at 47.04, plus a load of upper 30's which were not far away from the magic 40lb mark. Then Damien Linney & Andy Molyneux fished here in April 2011 taking a 51lb common backed up by 3 x 40’s, 15 x 30’s and 3 x 20’s.
A little later in the same month Gavin Todd caught 4 x 40's, 6 x 30’s, 3 x 20's and a 67lb catfish. Here’s what he had to say;
“It has the feel of your favourite lake in England, but with the French weather! Lovely owners who make you feel very welcome and the fish are not only big and in great condition but also fight like tigers.”
Villefond is fast establishing itself as a top quality specimen water and we’re confident it will become a must visit destination for carp fishing in France. If targeting large carp in beautiful surroundings is your goal then it’s definitely a water that you should visit. Don’t hesitate, don’t be disappointed, call us now.
The Carp Lake
First introduced to the carp fishing public in 2008, the complex is completely secure and can be found down a little used country road in a very tranquil corner of France.
The lake is a mature 8 acres which has been a fishery since the 1930’s, being first introduced to the carp fishing public in 2008. It has good access to all pegs, with 7 purpose built swims, including one double, for a maximum of 6 anglers. The margins with their over-hanging trees and shrubs are definitely not to be ignored; they are really productive fish holding areas. There’s also a tree lined island which is reachable from most swims.
The lake is largely snag free open water and the hard clay bottom varies from 1 to 5 metres with only a small amount of silt in the deeper water.
There are crayfish present (that’s why the carp grow so big!) but with the modern angling techniques of skinning boilies with heat shrink tube and meshing baits these will not cause you problems. Go prepared, there’s lots of information on our Blog on how to combat them.
The fish are fed on high protein pellet all through the winter, so they have had many months of un-pressured feeding.

The original fish stocks run to 30lb+ and include a couple of very large koi carp. In addition a further 200 carp over the 20lb mark were stocked, these were mainly mirrors with some leathers and commons. All these fish have grown on very well and if you take a look at the catch reports you’ll see that nearly every fish landed is 30lb+, an exceptionally good average weight.
However, the owners want to improve the venue still further and in January 2011 an additional batch of carp from fish farmer Michel Bigot were stocked. These fish were all young, fast growing carp that will certainly help boost the run rate. The weight (in lb’s) of the fish that were stocked was;
- 5 x commons; 27, 26, 22, 21, 20, 18
- 14 x mirrors; 25, 25, 24, 24, 24, 23, 23, 22, 22, 22, 22, 21, 20, 20
- 3 x grass carp; 15, 14, 12
Latest news;
The owners have just published their end of season report & tell us that the carp have done amazing well in 2011. The abundance of natural food and anglers bait has seen them put on lots of weight, making the average size of carp caught this year a fantastic 38lb!
But not only is the average weight of the carp massive but the chance of a 40lb+ carp is huge because in 2011 over 30 different 40's were identified!
The stock also includes 3 x 50lb+ carp and there's the real possibility of a lot more of the upper forties turning 50lb.
You can read the full report here.
