About the Lake
The swims
There are 5 comfortable single swims along one bank, the bases a mix of woodchip, gravel and grass. Each swim is equipped with a landing net, sling and cradle free of charge.
A lower-level swim set close to the water and reached by steps. Depth in front of the swim is approximately 1.4m. Beyond this, the bed slopes gently down to around 2.6m, then rises towards the far bank, where depths vary between 1.5m and 2m over harder ground.
To the left, a reed margin sits in around 2m of water, with a hard lake bed extending roughly 5m wide. To the right is a jetty, around 2m deep alongside. It is clearly marked, but becomes partly submerged in winter and spring. Overhanging trees on the far side make it possible to place baits accurately beneath the branches by bait boat.
Swim 2 - Pinus
Depth in front of the swim is approximately 1.3m. Beyond this, the lake bed slopes down to approximately 2.4m before rising towards the far bank, where depths are around 1m to 1.5m. To the left is a reed bed in around 1.5m of water, dropping to 2m over hard ground. The lake bed is predominantly sand and stone.
Depth in front of the swim is approximately 1.8m, with reeds, stone and sand features nearby. From here the lake bed slopes gradually towards the far bank, with depths averaging 1.8m to 2m. The far bank has a wide strip of stone along its edge. Overhanging trees line the margins.
Depth in front of the swim is approximately 1.3m. From here the lake bed slopes gradually into depths of 1.8m to 2m, with alternating sandy and silty areas. The far bank has a strip of gravel and overhanging trees. The swim contains a partially submerged tree, which can be dangerous if you fish too close to it.
Depth in front of the swim is approximately 1m. From here the lake bed slopes gradually to around 1.5m over hard, sandy areas, before dropping to approximately 2.5m in the central silty basin. The swim opens onto the entire right side of the lake, giving a large fishing area. The far bank has overhanging trees, with alternating sand and stone areas, and depths there vary between approximately 1.4m and 2m.
Depths vary through the year, reaching around 2.8m in the deeper areas when full and easing back to around 1.5m in the shallower spots over summer, when levels can drop by up to 70cm - please bear this in mind when reading the depths described above. The lake bed is made up of sand, gravel and stone, with some organic silt.
Plump Lake is a gravel pit and therefore a water where a marker rod is highly recommended for locating transitions between different bottom compositions and depths. Fishing is generally short to medium range, either by casting or using a bait boat.
There have been no poisson chat, but some anglers have reported a few crayfish. As with many lakes, this is often in the summer months when they become more active. It is best to go prepared - you can find lots of information here for combatting crayfish in France. Wrapping your baits is a tried and tested method to use when crays are active.
There is some weed present to be mindful of. In terms of particularly snaggy areas there is a jetty on the far bank between swims 1 and 2, supported by two marked posts, and a partially submerged tree to the right of swim 4 - both clearly marked above the waterline.
There is an oxygenator that is run as required in the hottest months.
Vehicle access
Every swim is reachable by car for unloading, and you're welcome to leave your car parked there for the duration of your stay. Swims 1, 2 and 3 are accessed via a stone track and swims 4 and 5 are accessed via grass/earth - in the event of heavy rain you may need to park slightly further away from these two swims.
Small campervans and minivans can also park close to the swims, though the site isn't suitable for larger motorhomes or caravans.
