News from Old Oaks lake
Apr 2020
15 Years at Old Oaks, 21st Apr
This year marks 15 years of Old Oaks, a French lake much loved by many.
Mehdi Daho purchased the lake in 2005, a 40 year old gravel pit previously unfished. Mehdi used all the knowledge he'd accumulated running his first lake Laroussi to great effect, hand picking each carp to be stocked.
Our first English anglers arrived in 2006, with the catch report showing nearly all low 20's. The layout of the lake allowed for relatively easy fishing and Old Oaks quickly established itself as a great runs water.
Over the following 15 years the landscape has changed a lot, with mature trees creating overhanging margins and the five swims sinking into their surroundings. But the biggest change here has been the carp... they have grown and grown some more!
The vast majority of carp have grown to 30lb+, with a huge number at 40lb+, right up to the magnificent long common which is the lake record at 71lb. Certainly, we would no longer describe it as a runs water, but you've got an excellent chance of cracking your PB here.
Last season, the average number worked out at 20 carp on the bank each week, although Daniel Akerman's group had a remarkable session with 68 fish in total, including 25 x 40's, 9 x 50's and a 70lb'er.

A Christmas Session, 21st Dec
Tom Dixon took advantage of the winter discount on Old Oaks and spent Christmas week on the bank this year.
He fished swims 1 & 5, ending the week with two fifties at 55lb 9oz & 53lb 8oz, three forties of 49lb 1oz, 49lb 7oz, 43lb 1oz and one high thirty.
'I was fortunate and got a mild start to my week, but still had to work for the fish especially when on your own in the winter where you need to stay mobile, as the fish move away from pressure, i'd advise people to always listen to Medhi, he told me once id caught a few i'd then have to move and he was right lol !! Thanks for a great week Mehdi.'

A great start to the season, 11th May
The start of the season has been really good !
Great weeks with 24, 32, 28, 42 fish out with many forties, fifties and sixties.
The Long Common came out at 69lb12oz.
Another 30kg of poisson chats caught in the traps, big total so far is almost 400kg now. Since march, just a handfull of poisson chat have been caught by the anglers, which is really good.
The latest anglers leaving this morning had 13 fish : 3 fifties and 10 forties! Incredible weight average.

The Long Common is out !, 18th Apr
We knew the Mighty Long Common will appear very soon and it happens this week.
Congratulations to Michael Haynes and his friend Tony Bannister for catching that awesome creature at his maximum weight 69lb12oz ! We were hoping for 70lb but since it's a male carp , it doesnt put a lot of weight as the female does. Michael words : " it 's a really incredible fish , so long and immaculate , a new PB for me..."
So far, they landed : 35lb, 36lb, 44lb, 45lb, 50lb2oz and 69lb12oz.
Well done !
