May Review, 1st Jun

Wow the weather in May has been a little crazy the torrential rain of April carried over to the start of the month and was quickly replaced almost over night with really high temperatures. The inevitable effect of this was that the fish turned there attention away from feeding and into breeding and the last 3 weeks of May have seen the fish spawning heavily.

Despite this May has seen a lot of fish on the bank to those anglers who have stayed with it and made the necessary changes (the best thing I can advice when the fishing is tough is ask mark or john for advice they are at the lake day in day out and know what is working and are always happy to help) these fish have included 5 fish topping the 40lb mark for the first time as well as countless known 40’s. Also the mighty Bennett’s has graced the bank again looking as huge as ever.

One of my favourite things at this time of year is that the place is alive with wildlife. The margins move every time you get close as frogs leap left right and centre, the surrounding bushes are alive with lizards, Buzzards soar in the sky’s above it is just a great place to be.

Fish of the month

There have been a lot of special fish to choose from including as I have mentioned 5 fish topping the 40lb mark for the first time and a lot of the big known fish including Bennett’s and rose. But for me this month came down to two fish that didn’t quite top the 40lb mark. Until the last few days of the month Son of Max would have been my choice for fish of the month but in those last few days a rare visitor to the bank was caught the stunning Finger Painting.

The Finger painting is named after the unique scale pattern at the tail end of its right flank that looks like a child’s finger painting. It really is one of the lakes real stunners and a rare one to the bank having not been caught since 2010. On this capture she was looking a little empty after spawning but still tipped the scales over 39lb. Even with her drawn out appearance she still looked as stunning as ever congratulations to Dave on this capture.

This is by no means an easy fish to try and target as she is very rarely caught and on the occasions she has been there has been no pattern, with each capture coming at different times of year from different swims. So those of you who want to catch her good luck.

I have included a pic of her last capture as well as of this capture so you can really see her in all her glory....

April Review, 1st May

The fish are yet to really get on the feed at Villefond but this hasn’t prevented anglers from having some amazing catches and some really special fish have been caught which has made picking a fish of the month really difficult.

A lot of the lakes real characters have been caught including the lakes biggest original Arthur at over 50lb, Arnold, Slate Grey, Little John and the big two tone fish known as Max.

But there have also been some real rare visitors to the bank caught such as Libby - this capture was only her 3rd ever, and a real long Mirror which again was caught for only the 3rd time and at over 40lb.

The weather out at the lake through most of April has been horrendous with consistent rain pretty much all month that just seemed to get worse and worse with full scale storm weather towards the end of the month. The guys we have had out have done a great job at braving the elements and putting some great fish on the bank so well done guys.

Fish of the month

So tough has the decision for fish of the month been this month that I have actually written and deleted this 3 times each focusing on a different fish, but I have finally made my decision.

For me the fish of the month in April was a fish known as the DIY Ghosty. The DIY Ghosty is another extremely rare visitor to the bank and was first caught in the first fishing trials on the lake in 2008. She was the first 30lb fish to be caught out of Lac Du Villefond and colour wise was the same as any other mirror carp. But something changed in the fish before its next visit to the bank.

She was next caught around a year later and had become a very pale coloured fish, but her transformation did not stop there. By the time of her next capture in March 2011 she had gone almost white in colour with the exception of big dark patches around her eyes. Some where along the line this once normal looking mirror carp had transformed into a ghost carp and has become one of the most sought after characters in Lac Du Villefond.

Now over a year since her last capture she has graced the net of one very lucky angler at 44lb+... her first capture over the 40lb mark... and she looked particularly impressive.

She is a fish that doesn’t get caught often and seems to put on steadily impressive weight gains between each capture. We will never know what caused the fishes appearance to change so drastically, but what ever it was certainly doesn’t change the fact that this is a fish with the potential to reach some big weights and who wouldn’t want to catch a 50lb+ Ghost carp one day?

The picture of the 43.4lb fish attached is only the 3rd recorded capture of this fish since stocked in 2008!

The picture of the 38.10lb fish although not one of the bigger fish but its extremely rare, only getting caught once every two years! 2008 then 2010 and now 2012!!
