July review, 4th Aug

The unsettled weather over the last few months has seen the fish spawn in a more staggered way to usual. Usually by the end of May most of the fish have finished and are back on the munch but with the weather being hot one week and wet the next this has been a more drawn out process this year. Some of the fish had finished spawning a week or 2 into June but others have only just finished and are just starting to feed up.

In the last two weeks of July we have really seen some of the big character fish showing up on the bank such as the awesome Bennett’s and the huge shouldered Arnold (both of these captures can be seen on videos on our video page)

July has also seen Villefond’s big catfish going on a feeding frenzy with 4 x 70+ catfish caught this month. It is one of these captures that I have chosen to focus on in more detail.

Fish of the month...

For the first time I have decided not to choose a carp as my fish of the month.  This is not because there haven’t been any worthy but because this fish I have chosen is a new official Villefond record catfish at 75lb 4oz. This particular catfish is not the biggest catfish in Villefond but is the biggest one banked to date and is a fish that was named Dan by one of our customers a few years ago.

Manager Mark Lambert caught it along with a 73lb cat whilst targeting this predatory species as a break from the carp fishing. The thing with catfish is if you hook them the only break you are likely to get is a break in your rod. Mark was able to avoid that fortunately and got the powerful creature to the bank.

Mark was again fortunate enough to capture some of the awesome fight on film which can be viewed on our video page too. Very few people have tried to target our catfish but if you are interested in doing so please ask Mark of some tips on swim choice as he has really got these predators habits sussed out.

A Weeks Carp Fishing at Villefond (July '12), 27th Jul

Mark Lambert recently spent a week fishing his own venue and recorded it in this short video clip.  We see carp to 40lb+ and Dan the catfish makes an appearance at 75lb.   Superb fishing!

May Review, 1st Jun

Wow the weather in May has been a little crazy the torrential rain of April carried over to the start of the month and was quickly replaced almost over night with really high temperatures. The inevitable effect of this was that the fish turned there attention away from feeding and into breeding and the last 3 weeks of May have seen the fish spawning heavily.

Despite this May has seen a lot of fish on the bank to those anglers who have stayed with it and made the necessary changes (the best thing I can advice when the fishing is tough is ask mark or john for advice they are at the lake day in day out and know what is working and are always happy to help) these fish have included 5 fish topping the 40lb mark for the first time as well as countless known 40’s. Also the mighty Bennett’s has graced the bank again looking as huge as ever.

One of my favourite things at this time of year is that the place is alive with wildlife. The margins move every time you get close as frogs leap left right and centre, the surrounding bushes are alive with lizards, Buzzards soar in the sky’s above it is just a great place to be.

Fish of the month

There have been a lot of special fish to choose from including as I have mentioned 5 fish topping the 40lb mark for the first time and a lot of the big known fish including Bennett’s and rose. But for me this month came down to two fish that didn’t quite top the 40lb mark. Until the last few days of the month Son of Max would have been my choice for fish of the month but in those last few days a rare visitor to the bank was caught the stunning Finger Painting.

The Finger painting is named after the unique scale pattern at the tail end of its right flank that looks like a child’s finger painting. It really is one of the lakes real stunners and a rare one to the bank having not been caught since 2010. On this capture she was looking a little empty after spawning but still tipped the scales over 39lb. Even with her drawn out appearance she still looked as stunning as ever congratulations to Dave on this capture.

This is by no means an easy fish to try and target as she is very rarely caught and on the occasions she has been there has been no pattern, with each capture coming at different times of year from different swims. So those of you who want to catch her good luck.

I have included a pic of her last capture as well as of this capture so you can really see her in all her glory....
