April Review, 1st May

The fish are yet to really get on the feed at Villefond but this hasn’t prevented anglers from having some amazing catches and some really special fish have been caught which has made picking a fish of the month really difficult.

A lot of the lakes real characters have been caught including the lakes biggest original Arthur at over 50lb, Arnold, Slate Grey, Little John and the big two tone fish known as Max.

But there have also been some real rare visitors to the bank caught such as Libby - this capture was only her 3rd ever, and a real long Mirror which again was caught for only the 3rd time and at over 40lb.

The weather out at the lake through most of April has been horrendous with consistent rain pretty much all month that just seemed to get worse and worse with full scale storm weather towards the end of the month. The guys we have had out have done a great job at braving the elements and putting some great fish on the bank so well done guys.

Fish of the month

So tough has the decision for fish of the month been this month that I have actually written and deleted this 3 times each focusing on a different fish, but I have finally made my decision.

For me the fish of the month in April was a fish known as the DIY Ghosty. The DIY Ghosty is another extremely rare visitor to the bank and was first caught in the first fishing trials on the lake in 2008. She was the first 30lb fish to be caught out of Lac Du Villefond and colour wise was the same as any other mirror carp. But something changed in the fish before its next visit to the bank.

She was next caught around a year later and had become a very pale coloured fish, but her transformation did not stop there. By the time of her next capture in March 2011 she had gone almost white in colour with the exception of big dark patches around her eyes. Some where along the line this once normal looking mirror carp had transformed into a ghost carp and has become one of the most sought after characters in Lac Du Villefond.

Now over a year since her last capture she has graced the net of one very lucky angler at 44lb+... her first capture over the 40lb mark... and she looked particularly impressive.

She is a fish that doesn’t get caught often and seems to put on steadily impressive weight gains between each capture. We will never know what caused the fishes appearance to change so drastically, but what ever it was certainly doesn’t change the fact that this is a fish with the potential to reach some big weights and who wouldn’t want to catch a 50lb+ Ghost carp one day?

The picture of the 38.10lb fish although not one of the bigger fish but its extremely rare, only getting caught once every two years! 2008 then 2010 and now 2012!!

March Review, 3rd Apr

A quick review

There’s been a lot going on at Lac Du Villefond in March partly due to the fact that the lake was frozen for almost the whole month of February. March has seen the finishing touches completed on the new mobile home accommodation and this is now available for our customers to use. Also this month saw the final Villefond baits field testing sessions, the filming of a promotional DVD for Angling Lines and the arrival of the first customers of 2012.

Once again the Villefond bait range has put a lot of fish on the bank in the field testing sessions and also to our customers who have purchased and used it. The lakes catfish appear to have woken up a little earlier than usual due to the warm spell we have had and a 67lb 12oz specimen was taken on a zig rig. The filming of the DVD also went well with some fish being very co-operative for the cameras, including one very special one which leads nicely into my next section.

Fish of the month

Its time for my fish of the month section and despite plenty of nice fish being tempted to the bank including lots of 40’s, for me the decision for fish of the month has been an easy one.

The capture took place during the filming of the promotional DVD and was all caught on film, adding to this special capture - you can see the video here .

The fish was Bennett’s and the reason for this being my fish of the month is not only because it was caught on film but also she broke the 50lb Barrier for the 1st time at 51lb+, becoming the lakes 4th known 50.

Again she demonstrated the cunning of these big Villefond fish and the bite was nothing more than a few beeps and some heavy twangs on the rod tip. She fought slow and deep and you only have to watch the video clip to see how huge she looked.

Bennett’s was stocked in 2008 as a low 20 and a year and half later was banked for the first time at a whopping 34lb it seemed then that she was destined to become one of the lakes biggest fish. She took a little longer to reach 50lb+ than we expected, mainly due to her tendency to get heavily involved in spawning activities. With her huge depth across her shoulders and massive frame there is no limit to what weight she may achieve in the future she is a real brute of a fish.

In the 4 years since Bennett’s was stocked she has more than doubled in weight and has become a real character and one of the real target fish in the lake. Definitely a worthy fish of the month.
