General Comments:

Well back in the UK and reflecting on a cracking first ever week on the lake. A difficult time for my brother and I with our mum passing away recently and this was certainly what was needed to lift our spirits. Set in a delightful part of the French countryside it is just so quiet at night except for the sound of nightingales and barking foxes . But with clear nights and no city light pollution I was astonished at how many stars there were to see too. I love the fact that it's a family run enterprise, people who care about the lake. For me the amenities were plenty, with a nice clean well supplied anglers lodge, toilet and excellent gas operated shower. I learnt so much about the fish, their habits and how to get the best out fishing here. First time you don't get everything right and an essential thing for next time for me will be a good barrow on account of my daft insistence on moving too much. In this case it was too soon as no sooner than I made up my mind to search for water a bit deeper on account of less than ideal high pressure and cold nights, than I was away with an impressive lump of a 48lb common...a 50 pounder for sure come May. The family help when they can ferrying your stuff to and fro from swims with a big cart but they can't be there all the time. That in itself is nice because once they know you have experience and you may be trusted as we were, you can carry on pretty much with the place to yourselves. The lack of mains electricity is not an issue with ice packs resupplied to keep food fresh in cooler boxes without a fridge. They even keep charged power banks in the anglers chalet to keep your phone topped up, a nice thoughtful touch that. Theres also a small boat and oars available for use at no extra charge should you snag up as I did once, providing you are sensible and use the vest provided. It's really intended for emergency use only. To be honest you shouldn't need it. All our fish came from within easy casting range. In some swims tree branches limit casting a little, but in shallows it was easy enough to wade to make casting easier. Just be ultra careful though as margins are lied with big rocks to stop erosion. They can also eat leads if you cast too close to the island margins which you should keep back from for that reason. A small bait boat avoids hazards associated with getting in the water. As for features, well the long island is the main one, but there's several overhanging trees which hold carp next to shallow and deep water from what we saw. There's a feeder stream one end, an outflow at the other. In many ways it reminds me of a French Redmire pool, just a bit more "grown up". Normal pests in French waterways, the poisson chats and crayfish didn't seem to be any problem. There weren't many nuisance fish either. No tench or bream came our way, I did catch a few big Rudd by design, but we did have one day with a few pasties caught, the inevitable consequence of spawning during recent hot summers. Great big hump backs on them too... monsters of the future. You cannot drive to swims, the reason for that being clear when we managed to get stuck off track 3 point turning after night of heavy rain. So stick to the track and reverse rather than go off it. As for the fishing it was how I like it. The fish were there, crashing about at night, but they don't wave white flags so you need to think about what you need to do to fool them. Listen to the advise of the father and son fisherman owners. They want you to catch. Very obligingly all our bites in high pressure spring weather came at very civilised times during the day, .Cear skies cold nights may be the reason. Or maybe we just never found those night feeding spots. Pretty much all our fish excluding a few pasties were absolute quality. I had 4 takes, losing one and landing cracking chunky immaculate commons of 40lb, 48lb before an immensely long mirror known as Dorian came my way. My second biggest ever in France at 57 1/2lb although I believe she normally goes up to 63lb. That made me very happy I can tell you. Brother did even better pipping me with an even bigger incredible scaley mirror of over 58lb paired with a other "new" 50 in 24 hours. If it is new, following the theme of ladies names it may even be named "Rhona" after our late mum. He also had an upper 20 mirror and a stunning zip linear mid 30 as well as losing just one to a hook pull. The fish were all worked for with a careful approach centred around keeping the line well pinned down and not recasting too often. The owners went above and beyond helping retrieve our van stuck from the mud, the only time we didn't listen to their advise and keep to the track. All in all a lovely venue, quiet and relaxing with a stock of quality fish and a few potential monsters, one of which came out the week before, a common at over 60lb. And you don't need to worry about bait either because not 15 minutes away there's a proper carp tackle shop selling decent English boilies from the mainline range. My brother even bought a spare bait boat battery there. It's certainly somewhere we hope to return to before too long for the other monsters it holds . Thank you Lac Du Villefond

General Comments:

Just like to say a massive thank you to Debbie John and Mark for a fantastic week on a beautiful lake. The food package and hospitality was excellent, unfortunately the weather was against us with horrific relentless rain and wind. Despite that I managed 9 fish in total with my PB mirror of 56lb 14oz (Delilah) 3x 40’s, 1x 30 3x 20 and 2x upper doubles. A total of 20 fish from our group (3 anglers) and a big congratulations to Matty for the biggest fish of the week called the Scar common at 61,05. 100% we will return asap hopefully with better weather conditions.
